The Biggest Waste of Money You Ever Made, and The Best Investment You Ever Made

Could make for some interesting posts. Maybe a dud of a car. Maybe an ex. What was it?

My Worst... BY FAR was our complete lack of assertiveness in dealing with our former investment advisor many years ago when we were just starting out as a young married couple. We were completely ignored for more years than I care to admit. I am convinced that those lost years of compound interest probably will cost us $100k by the time we retire.

My Best.... Sending my wife back to school to be a dental hygienist. Good money and flexible schedule.

Biggest waste: Buying after market parts for my quads to race mx for a few years. Buy a new quad = $6000. Make it race ready at my level = $8000. Travel, practice, maintenance, race fee's = appx. $2500 per year. After 2 years of pounding the quad into the ground sell it for $6000 if your lucky and start over. After it was all said and done I ended up with a nice credit card bill and $0 in my savings but I did have one hell of a good time and met a ton of people over the years while my other friends spent the weekends in the bar.
Actually now thinking back I had over $16000 in one of my quads.

    Best Investment: Lasik eye surgery!

I'll tell you about the best investment I didn't make. It sort of covers both.

Well, I was just beginning to learn about stocks and bonds a few years ago and found out Google was having an IPO. I literally begged my father to allow me to put my current level of savings (15,000) at the time into Google stock (I was fairly young then so I didn't know how to buy stock myself). Him, thinking technology is unpredictable and stocks are crazy for young people, repeatedly told me I was an idiot and was going to lose all my money. I told him that this was a life long investment, and would only sell if google hit some hugely high number soon, like $800.

Sadly, Google went from like $85 to $800 in two years, and I learned that the only one who should really make your financial decisions is you, not even your parents are good sources of advice. It was also a good coming of age story for me, as it finally gave me the confidence I needed to break free from having to ask my parents for advice on everything.

Worst: Credit card debt that nearly wiped me out 3 years ago.
Best: Debt consolidation loan that got paid off last week. And while I still have student loan debt (the Fed gov't is the creditor), I will be debt-free in 3 years. That is ... unless I decide to go to law school.

Worst: I bought a house once. At least I'm young enough to declare bankruptcy and recover nicely. The bankruptcy will turn into my best investment, undoubtedly.

Best: So far, my best investment was more of a sacrifice. I bit the bullet and was supported by my dad and my girl while I went to vocational school so that I could get A+ certified and get into IT. The difference in pay between the jobs now and before then is pretty insane.

Worst---private university education. While I'd call it a decent educational experience (in more ways than one) I just don't think it quite justified the costs.

Best. Buying gold (both physical and stocks) back in the early 2000's until 2007.

    Worst (non) investment

Not finding this website back in 2006 when I was being scouted by the Phillies, Cardinals, Twins, and the Pirates. I attest my lack of physical conditioning to my poor performance that year that ended up in me blowing my chances. Now 45 pounds later I am pretty physically sound...too bad I am 4 years too late.

    Best Investment
Choosing computer science as my major. I landed a decent paying job right out of college within 6 hours of putting my resume on monster. Graduated with 9 people, while the business majors were over 2000.

Best: buying land in Phoenix AZ and then selling it for about 2.5x what I paid

Worst: using that money to buy a house in Phoenix that I still own and have to rent out at a loss of about $800/mo

    best:

education (I really think that for many its a waste of money.. you get what you give). Because of my education I make a very comfortible living working 35hours a week which leaves lots of time for training and such.

finding wife who is cheaper then I am (and I am pretty cheap). I'm lucky that im with a girl who doesn't care much at all about material goods. She saves money better then I thought possible and gives it to me when I need it hahaha.

I have no kids, thats the biggest reason I am not poor haha

    worst:

first year college boozing! Spent way to much money, drank way to much, some good memories I suppose. Id probally do it again to be honest, but 1 year was plenty.

    Best: My businesses.

Worst: Buying my house in my neighborhood. Suppose to be the estates section and with the down turn in the housing the rest of the section was built with homes that were half the price of mine. Value of my house is way down and not to mention I can't stand a majority of my neighbors. So this spring I am going to move and make my current house into a half way house for a year to give my neighbors a BIG FU!!! Since they sucked a year of my wife's life making her miserable I am going to do the same to them.

Good question. I don't know if I have a solid answer for either.

Worst was probably buying my girlfriend at the time a motorcycle. Lost about $2500 on that. She said she would pay me, but after we broke up I never saw another penny.

Best, hmmm. Lasik would be up there. Education too.

    Worst:

Getting my master's degree. The program was absolute garbage (which I guess is my fault for not researching enough). Put me 45k in debt, and really does nothing for me. All those people who argue you get paid more with a masters.. it's not much more. Two years that I could've been working for pretty much the same salary. I should've gone for a PhD instead, much more prestige and salary oppurtunities.

    Best

Not really sure. I guess, ironically, it would be my undergrad degree, in which I really learned alot and gained a passion in life.

    hmm.

BIggest Waste of Money = Buying a BMW M3 Convertible - Bought it for 25K ($40K) and then 18 months later sold it for 18K ($28K) and at one point I spent $1K fixing the light and $2K on new tires lol plus a bunch of other servicing and $2K a year insurance.. But, it was a fun 18 months!

Best Investment = Leaving my VERY high paid job working for someone else and taking a 75% pay cut to work full time on my own business
