The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Do you vary your grip when doing DE work? Once I started using wide, normal and close grip along with using a pair of Fat Gripz my bench started increasing big time!

Thanks Bri! Had two large pizzas for my dinner last night (~2000kcals just in that one meal alone) so I should be well fuelled for it, haha!

Thanks bud, really enjoy the barbell rows - don't think I've seen a single other person in my gym who does them from the floor!

Hey bud - yeah, the speed work is always done normal grip, then a open it up wider on the plyos. Definitely feeling the benefits from benching twice a week, as well as the added DB chest work. My close-grip is very close to my normal bench, so it's definitely a lagging chest rather than triceps that're holding me back.

    ME Lower

    Squats:

    15xbar
    6x80(176)
    4x105(231)
    2x120(264)
    1x140(308)
    1x160(352)Equals PR
    10x105(231)
    10x105(231)

Rack Pulls (just above knee height):

    4x155(341)
    4x155(341)
    4x155(341)

    Good Mornings:

    12x65(143)
    12x65(143)
    15x65(143)

    Walking DB Lunges(weight per hand):

    6/6x22.5(50)
    6/6x27.5(60)

    Decline Crunches:

    12xBW+20(44)
    9xBW+20(44)
    12xBW

    ----------
    Summary:

Very happy with that. 160kg pinned me to the rack only a coupla weeks ago. Today, it went down then up with minimal drama. Equals the PR I set many moons ago. Only way is up from here!

Next stop for squats... four plates.

Rack Pulls were easy, could've gone up to four plates on them, I reckon, but with GMs following I wanted to protect lower back.

Walking lunges are AWFUL. Had to use different weights and reps than planned, as there were other people in the gym, so limited space and dumbbells to choose from.

By the time I got round to crunches, I had nothing left, haha.

But got home with a smile on my face.

Calories, my friends, that's the answer to defeating the cardio. Food! Doesn't matter what it is, cram it in and the strength - it returns!

    Onwards and upwards.

Congrats on the PR! Couple questions. Do you wear a belt when squatting, DL? I don't and rarely even need to hit abs. When I do it's only like 5 sets to failure on rope crunches. And do you have a pair of Fat Gripz? They'll help a ton with your bench. They help you recruit more muscles while gripping the bar.

Hey bud, cheers! I do have a belt - I wear it for top sets, so on that workout, for example, I'm beltless up to 120kg, then had it on for 140kg and 160kg.

Fat grips are certainly something I could look into, I'll have a read up on them.

    Light Interval Training

    5mins Warmup Jog

    Six of the following intervals:

    45sec fast run
    45sec cooldown jog
    1min rest

    Then a 5min cooldown jog.

    ----------
    Summary:

Easy running today. Main issue was my right shin was aching to start with, then the muscle down the outside of my right shin began to twinge. Eased off a little on the last coupla sets because of this.

Probably just sore from Good Mornings yesterday - could really feel the entirety of my legs being worked by the GMs yesterday!

House has been mad today, door being knocked on non-stop by deliverymen.

All my chainsawing PPE has arrived: helmet, bib+bracers, boots and gloves, ready to get choppin' next week.

Lots of new tobacco from my favourite tobacconist (National Pipe Smoking Day next Weds!).

But most exciting of all, the gear I ordered from Pullum Sports (UK powerlifting supplies shop) arrived!

    - 2x mini-bands
    - 2x light-bands
    - Lifting straps (for shrugs)
    - Wrist wraps, for benching etc

Really happy about that - gonna start adding in bands to my DE sessions. Hopefully will make the speed work more effective

    CGBP:

    4x50(110)
    1x65(143)
    1x75(165)

    JM Presses:

    Plyo Bench (Wide-grip, Fast, Full-ROM):

    10xbar
    6x40(88)
    2x50(110)
    12x30(66)

    Decline dumbbell flyes:

    10x25s(55s)

    Hanging leg raises:

    12, 12, 12

    ----------
    Summary:

Close-grips are on fire now, which is great. Could have easily (and probably should have) stuck 100kg on there instead of 95.

However, this only serves to highlight how bad my normal grip bench is in comparison.

JMs kicked my ass, as per.

Decline DBs were awkward and I managed to tweak my shoulder, the one I injured last year. Slathering it in ibuprofen and drinking beer.

Noticed that joints were aching in general today, so I bought a huge bottle of extra-strength cod liver oil (even cod-ier than ever!) so I'm hoping some of that morning and night will help matters.

If your CGBP is that strong and almost equal to your standard BP you should look at hitting more wide grip. Something tells me that'll help bring up your numbers.

Cheers Jay! Hoping to get a four-plate squat by summer. Just gotta make sure I eat enough, hehe.

Shoulder that I tweaked yesterday is still sore this morning. I have full ROM with it, but once in a while it will twinge quite painfully as I go to reach for something.

Alex reckons I may have snagged a bit of scar tissue from my old injury. Hopefully it'll heal up in a few days - will just train through it, if it's not painful; seemed to work with my dodgy wrist - that's not hurt me for a while now, despite pulling heavy deads on it!

    Thanks both!

Shoulder still very painful atm. It's an odd and awkward pain - it can be absolutely fine, no pain whatsoever for an hour, then I turn my arm in a certain manner and POW it's like someone stabs me in the shoulder with a big knife, lol.

Just gonna keep munching the cod liver and ibuprofen, hope it heals up.

    Russian Cable Twists:

    15x20(44)
    15x20(44)
    15x20(44)

    ----------
    Summary:

Shoulder twinged me a coupla times again this morning, so was worried it would affect squatting etc, but didn't seem to. Was absolutely fine in squats and GMs.

It's fine 99% of the time, in fact. Just once in a while it feels as though a piece of tissue gets caught between two halves of a joint and pulls - excruciating. Thankfully it seems to be happening less and less as time goes on.

First time squatting against bands - tbh, a) I'm 5'6'' and b) they're mini bands, so I didn't feel much difference at all, really. I have light bands, too, so may try them next time, or might simply choke the minis and see what diff that makes.

Cod Liver Oil. For some reason, lately, I've developed an inability to swallow tablets. Purely and utterly a mental thing, I reckon, because even the tiniest little tablet, like my hayfever tablets, which are smaller than a tictac will stubbornly refuse to go down, yet large chunks of food that I'm not thinking about whilst eating will go down no problem...

To get past this, I bought some Cod Liver Oil in its original oil form. Oh... my... god. The taste is horrifying beyond all my ability to express. It just explodes in your mouth in a tide of rancid, rotten, bottom-of-the-rubbish-bin foulness.

To try to disguise it this morning, I mixed it in with my protein shake, hoping the huge amounts of dextrose would hide it. Nope. Just ended up with an entire shaker full of cod liver taste....

Gonna just pinch my nose and neck it by the shot, then wash the taste out with copious water, methinks.

I enjoy squatting and pulling against bands. If I were you, I would use the light bands. You'll probably have to choke them to get some decent tension out of it.

I'm thinking so, bud. Certainly makes me feel more 'westside' now I've got some bands, haha.

Really enjoying it, bud. If it wasn't for the running, I'd be stronger than ever already. As it stands, I'm now back up to my previous best strength levels and ready to set PRs from here on in, haha.

Both upper sessions this week are going to be very light, just to get the blood flowing and allow the shoulder to heal up.
