The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Cheers guys!

Yeah, I'll make sure to still get higher reps in from time to time. Gonna have a bit of a mess around the next few weeks, mix things up a bit. I'm sure some exercises will respond better to more reps than others. I didn't really feel the 3 reps on the lat pulldown were any good, for example. May stick to high reps for them.

Same with squats - seeing as it's almost always the squat that hurts my back, I'd rather stick to six reps than triples.

But deads, bench and some other things such as chins and dips I know I respond better to with lower reps.

We'll see - gotta strike a balance between making gains at a rate I'm happy with and staying injury-free. Not trying to jinx it, but my back's feeling strong, joints're good and I'm feeling fair confident.

Hope so, Hayden! I might even just reduce upper body stuff down to 3x3, but keep deads and squats a bit higher for now.

Hopefully gonna force myself down to the gym today to crack out a squat session. All bunged up and coughing atm. Will see how I feel after I've got my morning coffee down me!

Triples are definitely a lot of fun. I really like doing a main movement for lower reps and following up with some accessory work with varying rep ranges.

Hope you feel better soon mate!

    Cheers Luna!

Completely wiped out today - that's the problem with having asthma, soon as you get a cold it just cripples your breathing haha!

Got big plans for my workout tomorrow though, in order to make up for missing Weds' session.

Monday Squats - on a Tuesday!

    Squats:

    10xbar
    6x60(132)
    6x80(176)
    6x100(220)
    6x120(265)

DB Lunges: 22kg in each hand, 3x3reps each leg.

    Leg Press:

    6x100(220)
    6x150(330)
    6x200(440)
    6x240(528) PR

    Leg Curl Machine:

    10x36(80)
    10x36(80)
    10x36(80)

    Calf Raise Machine:

    6x50(110)
    6x70(154)
    21x91(200) PR

    ----------
    Summary:

Had low expectations when I was walking into the gym today - I've not trained for almost a week, drank too much alcohol AND been ill.

But it was a great session today!

Squats felt good. Had one of the big bodybuilders from the gym spot me. He said I need to learn to engage my glutes more and that if I do I'll be able to lift more quite easily. As it is, it's my back and legs taking most the slack.

Saying that, I felt and still feel no pain in my lower back at all, which I'm happy about. I think the mobility work has helped my squat form a lot. Just need to learn to engage glutes more somehow.

Leg Presses didn't feel too hard at all.

Made a bit of an error with lunges. Didn't realise how heavy 44kg(100lbs) would be on singles leg lunges. Next week will use less weight and aim for about 8 reps each leg.

    Upper Body Day

    Bench:

    10xbar
    6x40(88)
    6x60(132)
    3x82.5(182)
    3x82.5(182)
    3x82.5(182)

    Standing Overhead Press:

    10xbar
    6x40(88)
    3x52.5(115)
    3x55(120)
    2x55(120)
    6x40(88)
    3x40(88)
    2x40(88)
    6xbar

    Dips:

    6xBW
    3xBW+10(22)
    3xBW+10(22)
    3xBW+10(22)

    Lat Pulldowns:

    8x50(110)
    8x50(110)
    8x50(110)

    DB Hammer Curls:

    6x18(40)
    10x12(26)
    12x9(20)

    Cable Crunches:

    10x30(66)
    10x50(110)
    20x70(154)
    20x70(154)

    ----------
    Summary:

I think the unintentional deload ie having a cold, really did the job - another great session today.

Bench felt strong. If i keep adding 2.5kg each week, which I feel I can, then I'll be at 3x90kg within another fortnight. Everything after that will be a PR. Big milestone will be the 100kg for 3. Can't wait for that.

Went mental on the Standing Press. Don't know why, but just kept attacking the bar even as I got more and more tired, haha!

Left myself with so little in the tank after them that I kept the weighted dips at the same as last week rather than try to add weight.

Pulldowns felt better in the 8 rep range.

Started doing cable crunches again as ab exercise, as they don't hurt my lower back at all.

Thanks both. Main goals for upper body are a bench of 100kg and overhead of 60. 2pps and 1pps respectively. Be very happy with that in the short term.

    Yesterday's Deadlifts

    Deadlifts:

    6x60(132)
    6x60(132)
    6x100(220)
    6x120(265)
    3x140(309)
    3x160(350)PR
    1x180(400)PR

    Sumo DL:

    6x100(220)
    6x100(220)

    BB Rows:

    6x60(132)
    6x60(132)

    ----------
    Summary:

Don't know where that came from. Left shoulder is still really stiff from all the overhead work on Wednesday, so I wasn't expecting a great day pulling, however the shoulder never came into it.

Wore my deadlift slippers rather than trainers, which helped.

3 plates was easy as anything. Skipped 150x3 and went for 160 as I knew that'd be a PR. Flew up. Was absolutely buzzing and wanted a heavy single just to prove that I could. Tempted to go for 170kg, but I only had enough energy for one so I thought 'fuck it' and stuck on four plates per side.

Tightened my belt a notch, chalked my hands, chalked the bar and let rip. I wouldn't say it flew up, but it went smooth, no hitching. If anything, I may have had another 5kg in me.

Only error was I shouted about halfway up the lift and I could physically feel my core stability dropping away, haha! Luckily it was going up fast enough to make no odds.

First time ever trying sumo deadlifts today. Felt VERY different to conventional and I think I'm gonna keep them in the routine - gave me a way to add more volume without feeling like I'm straining the same muscles.

Rows were nice and easy, making sure to reset every rep on the floor.

Really, really happy with that workout. Stomped around the gym like the Incredible Hulk after lifting that 4pps, lol.
