The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Cheers Luna, sounds like a good idea! I'm thinking maybe incline bench and tricep pulldowns/skullcrushers on the Sat.

When I get stuck on bench, it's usually about halfway up - is that a tri or chest problem do you think?

Most will say triceps...........its everything really.

If your chest, shoulders and lats were stronger and you were faster you would not stop half way.

At the end of the day you have to miss somewhere or you would bench 1,200lb.

    Youll sort it out!!

I'm gonna say triceps and maybe some shoulder...But mainly triceps. Start hitting some close grip work and boards.

Mainly triceps if you get stuck halfway up. Yes you could get past it when faster, but triceps is still the weak link. This has always been a weakness for me to for years. I have made it a lot better, but my strength off the bottom always stays ahead of it. I wish I only had to bench the first half though; I would bench 450 by now.

Thanks for the advice, everyone, really appreciate it all!

Looks like I'm gonna be nuking my triceps then, haha!

Sat or Sun routine will be:

DB Bench or CG Bench (mix them up for variety)
    Standing Press
    Dips
    Tricep Pulldowns
    Lat Pulldowns
    Curls

All of this will be lower weight, more reps than my Wednesday session, try to pack some muscle on.

Unfortunately don't have a training partner to do board-work with. It's a commercial gym; people give me funny looks just for deadlifting...

You could try a floor press. For me, its exactly half way through my bench ROM and it really works the pressing muscles. I would use that on your main day though and go heavy for triples. This would be easy to do without a spotter.

I agree with Nick here. The powerlifts are a concert of muscle activity. The main thing is to be sure you're addressing each muscle in that concert equally within the workload capability of that particular muscle. Your excercise selection looks good to me. Just putting as much focus and effort into the excercises you don't like as the one's you do is the real secret I think. Then time will balance everything out. Sometime's we try to make it more complicated than it really is. I'd be careful about adding extra days or sessions for the same groups per week. If full recovery doesn't happen, gains won't either.

Glad the shoulder is improving! Just keep at it. Consistancy and patience is the only only real key to long term success.

    Cheers MM! Good advice.

If I start to feel overtrained in those muscle groups then I'll know adding an extra day in is a bad move, but I'm thinking to keep that workout a bit lighter anyway. And yeah, I'm not trying to overcomplicate things, but people have said before that the triceps can take a lot of workload, so I see no harm in adding a bit more work for them for now. As it stands, I don't feel I give my upperbody a lot of work.

You can do board work by yourself. Just put the board under your shirt or wear a second shirt and put it in between. Or also you could put a band around the board and around your back and keep it in place. Another option is dead presses (aka pin presses) from different heights.

I always would take an old towel, twist it until it is solid, and use tape to secure it and throw that under my shirt.

    ----------
    Summary:

Happy with weights all round. If I eat, sleep and don't injure myself, I'll be squatting 3pps for a triple next week.

Right calf cramped up on the Hamstring curls - yet oddly enough it was absolutely fine doing a set of 26 rotary calf raises, haha!

On a side note, I was a bit pissed off at the beginning of the session; I happily sauntered over to the (almost always) empty power rack, only to find that there was no bar. Looked around the place, every single Oly bar was being used. I had to wait around for 10-15mins until someone finished on the bench and I could pounce on a bar.

That's the problem with having a power rack, 2 flat benches, 2 incline benches, 2 decline benches and only four barbells...

Crap like that makes me want to have a home gym even more. Grr, arg, lol.

Thanks Tom. Could prob do more on the leg press easily enough, but it's so busy in there that there's rarely enough plates free, haha.
