The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Nice bit of extra volume there Gaz! Have you ever tried DB SkullCrushers instead of barbell ones? Very similar movement but cos the wrists aren't fixed you get less stress on elbows. May be worth a go?

Cheers Hayden, just tryin' to get a bit of upper body mass, though had a friend I've not seen in 6 months comment today that I look like a proper weightlifter now lol. I'll have to get some photos up soon, I've deffo changed in a year of training.

No, I've not tried those style skullcrushers yet - was using EZ-bar today and it was hell on the elbows - they were the only limiting factor. I'll give the dumbbell ones a go next sunday, cheers!

Bonus of training on a sunday, the gym's empty. Was great.

    Squat Day!

    Squats:

    6x60(132)
    6x60(132)
    6x100(220)
    6x120(265)
    3x140(309) PR

    Leg Press:

    6x100(220)
    6x150(330)
    6x200(440)
    6x250(550)
    6x300(660) PR
    20x150(330)

    Leg Curls:

    10x43(95)
    10x43(95)
    10x43(95)

    Calf Raise:

    8x30(66)
    8x50(110)
    8x70(154)
    30x91(200)

    Cable Crunches:

    15x30(66)
    15x50(110)
    15x70(154)
    15x91(200)

    ----------
    Summary:

Contrary to the numbers, I didn't feel this session. Was achey and tired before I even started.

Even the warmups felt tough on the squat. Had a nasty feeling in my left quad on the sets of 60 and 100, which I put down to it being very cold outside.

Felt physically sick after the 6 reps at 120kg, had to have a 5min breather, haha. In hindsight, shouldn't have gone for the 3pps set not feeling 100%, but I had it in my head that I was going to go for it, so I did.

Had a tiny bit of bother walking the 300lbs out - didn't feel too heavy on the back, but the hooks on the rack are quite tall and managed to clip one with the bar on the way out, which gave me a slight wobble. First rep felt epic, second rep slightly less so. Third and final rep was a bit of a grinder; went down a bit too quick which made me fall forward slightly. Was in two minds whether drop it on the pins, but instead looked up and powered through with the glutes and managed to muscle it up.

Now I've got that goal ticked off, gonna dial back the weight about 10-20% for the next coupla weeks, try to drill the form a bit more. Maybe get some 20 reppers in too.

Leg Press PR was nice to have. Feel like I may even have another 100lbs in that.

Rotary calf has exploded, was a piece of cake to rep out 30 reps. Need to find something else to work the calves with, I think. Any suggestions?

These are what I do without access to specialised machines. No spinal loading, works the grip as well.

Use a barbell or smith machine and you can stack as many plates as you want on it. You can stand on a plate or 2x6 or whatever similar to that and do calf raises. Or I have seen people use a leg press or hack squat machine for calf raises before.

And if you're saying you got a squat pr on a bad day, then that is a good thing.

Thanks April. Might have to see whether I can use the plate-loaded leg press for calf raises.

And yeah, wasn't feeling the best today, tbh. A PR's a PR but my form wasn't great lol.

I recommend using the leg press for calf raises mate.
    Current 1RM's - Bench 264lbs (Target 308lbs)/Squat 396lbs (Target 352lbs)/
    Deadlift 429lbs (Target 440lbs)
    BIG 3 TOTAL at 220lbs (28% BF) = 1089lbs

Hey, 140kg is a nice milestone man. Great work, you should be happy with that. And 20 rep squats are a good experience. I've actually started throwing them in again myself.

Congrats on the squat PR Gazzy, great work. Question, are you using sets of 6 on your squat to warm up or to get volume in?

Thanks Luna! The lighter sets are just for warming up, but everything 100kg plus is extra volume.

Think next week I'm gonna take it up to two sets @ 120kg, then drop it down to either 90 or 100kg for a 20 repper.

Maybe an idea is to increase the number of sets you are doing but lower the reps. I would expect you to tire out a bit before you hit your triple. It would be better to hit a maximum effort on your triple, then drop the weight and get some volume in. The way i work up is like this:
    % based on 1RM or 3RM
    5x50%
    3x60%
    2x70%
    1x80%
    1x90%
    1x95%
    1x100% or new PR
(source: The Max Effort Method by Jim Wendler)

This will get me fired up to hit a PR but not tire me out. After the 100% you could drop the weight to 85-90% and do some sets of 5.

Just an idea ofcourse, I dont mean to give unsolicited advice. If this works for you then that is great but i think you could hit more on your triple working up a little different.

You're probably right, Luna! That'd probably work really well for raising my triple.

Not sure though whether to still get a good few sessions in with higher reps to build some quality mass.
