The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Thanks for the comments guys.

In the middle of planning out tomorrow's deadlift workout now, using 5/3/1 BBB.

    Using a 1RM of 190kg. 90% of that is 171kg.

    So...

    Warm Ups
    Set 1: 5x110kg (rounding down from 111)
    Set 2: 5x130kg (rounding up from 128)
    Set 3: 5+ x145kg

    Then BBB of 5x10 @ 85kg

    Followed by Abs 5x12

So, that's what I've come up with using a 5/3/1 calculator. Does that seem about right to those of you who have used/are using it? The weights seem a little light, but then the best gains I've ever seen are when I'm training well sub-max for weeks on end after recovering from injury, so maybe it makes sense...

    Cheers

    First Day Back At Deadlifts

    Deadlifts:

    5x60(132)
    5x60(132)
    5x60(132)
    5x110(242)
    5x130(286)
    5x145(319)

    BBB Deadlifts:

    10x85(187)
    10x85(187)
    10x85(187)
    10x85(187)
    10x85(187)

    Hanging Leg Raises:

    3x10

    ----------
    Summary:

First day training deadlifts for about a month and also first day trying 5/3/1.

Couldn't go all out on the final set of Heavy DLs as I tweaked my back on the fourth rep at 145kg. I was expecting to pull my back at least slightly after so long off, and it feels a lot better now even an hour later, so not unhappy at all.

The BBB DLs got me redfaced and sweating like a pig. I honestly thought that I was going to pass out after a couple of those sets of 10! Must remember to breathe, lol.

Next in on Sunday for Overhead Press day. Looking forward to it.

All that volume should help your pull out for sure. Good luck with 531, glad to see your giving it a shot.

    Overhead Press Day

    Standing Press:

    5xbar
    5xbar
    5xbar
    5x40(88)
    5x47.5(104.5)
    7x52.5(115.5)

    BBB Standing Press:

    10x30(66)
    10x30(66)
    10x30(66)
    10x30(66)
    10x30(66)

    Pullups:

    3
    2

    Cable Curls:

    10x20(44)
    10x30(66)
    10x40(88)
    10x50(110)
    10x50(110)

    ----------
    Summary:

Good session. I've always enjoyed Standing Press so having a day to itself is good for me.

By the end of BBB my arms felt like they were made of lead.

Tried some pullups - program recommends Chins on SP day, but my gym only has pullups bars, not chinning bar - and they aggravated my should injury, so I'm not going to do them. Did some curls instead, much easier.

Off for a big Sunday Roast Dinner to fuel recovery ready for SQWATS tomorrow!

To mainly focus on shoulder pressing that way is great and will pay off.

    Squat Day!

    Squats:

    5xbar
    5x60(132)
    5x60(132)
    5x92.5(203.5)
    5x107.5(236.5)
    7x122.5(269.5)

    BBB Squats:

    10x72.5(159.5)
    10x72.5(159.5)
    10x72.5(159.5)
    10x72.5(159.5)
    10x72.5(159.5)

    ----------
    Summary:

Due to time constrictions didn't have the chance to do another assistance exercise, but feel I got plenty done anyway.

Only bench session left, then moving onto week 2 of the mesocycle, starting with Deads.

Just wondering something though - I've been using a 531 calculator to plan out my workouts. With my squats, basing my 1RM as 160kg(352), then the final week of the 1st mesocycle asks me to do 1+ reps with 136kg.

Seeing as I've done 140kg for 6 reps before, doesn't that seem a little light?

    Yeah Bri.

    Max 160kg
    90% of Max 144kg
So the figures are 65% etc of 144kg.

Which seems a little light, cos I can do 6x140kg (well, could before I had three weeks off for the walk, prob collapse under it atm, lol).

It could be that I'm underestimating my max, but either way, a nice light first cycle might do me some good to get my strength back before pushing myself.

If you didn't use an actual max, then it's possible that your numbers may be off. But like Wendler said in the book, it's better to start off light then heavy. Just give it time and see what happens.

Nice Gaz! I'm likely going to move to 531 at some point in the future. I'm thinking once my squats and deads get up to where they should be. I think it's a great program from what I've read about it, really interested to see how it works out for you. I think I'll do some more reading on it today.

This was my favourite part of 5/3/1, doing BBB on DLs.

On my first cycle of 5/3/1 i got 15 reps on bench press on my final set of the third week, so i started out light as well. Just remember, you will be adding 10lbs to SQ/DL every 4 weeks and 5lbs to your presses. This is 130lbs for your SQ/DL in a year and 65lbs for the presses, which is great progress.

I've only been on it a week so far, but definitely worth a go, I'd say. Feeling very pumped after each session, like I've done a lot of work, and not had DOMS so much in ages, haha.

    Summary:

    Really good session, very enjoyable.

Very surprised at how many reps I got at 75kg, didn't think I'd get anything like that, but really worked on technique today. Back was arched, elbows kept in, getting some good leg drive, forcing my shoulders into the bench. Really clicking, so very happy.

BBB on bench was good fun - widened my grip a little bit to work my chest, get some hypertrophy going.

Rows were good too, nice to do them light and for plenty of reps.

All in all, very happy with how the training went.
