The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Nice session Gaz. Good to hear things are falling in place for your bench press.

    Deadlift Day

    Deadlifts:

    10x60(132)
    10x60(132)
    3x100(220)
    3x120(264)

    10x85(187)
    10x85(187)
    10x85(187)

    Hanging Leg Raises:

    3x10

    ----------
    Summary:

Bit of a frustrating day - I should be good for way more than 5@152.5kg, but for some reason my back was threatening to go again on the fifth rep. The strength was there to easily keep going, so it must be a form issue.

I think what I'm doing is getting too low to start, almost squatting the weight up. Next week, gonna make sure I'm nice and tight and try to lever the weight up, rather than squat it up. I reckon my form must have just broken down over the last few weeks of not deadlifting. Need to get back into the swing of it.

Gotta be happy about seeing some progression on the bench. I'm going to go ahead and make a small suggestion (of course take it with a grain of salt since I'm still learning and this is just what seems to have worked for me) that may help with your bench.

If you think that the reason your bench press is stalling is due to a technique issue, try working close grip bench somewhere into your routine. I find that my elbows are perfectly tucked during it and I lower the weight to the proper spot on my chest effortlessly without thinking about it. Due to this, I've noticed my regular bench press technique has started to change ever so slightly.

Cheers Brian! Two milestones ahead that I can smell - 200kg (which I'd like next week - gonna add some singles onto the end of Deadlift set) and then 5pps (which will be a good coupla months after that, I reckon).

    Cheers Rileigh!

My bench is coming along nicely now, for all the reasons you've described. Keep elbows tucked in helps so much, as it helps the entire jupper back feel tight. And when the upper back feels tight, it's much easier to get drive with the legs.

    All linked in together lol.

Looking forward to wednesday to do some more benching now, just talking about it has got me fired up lol

Thanks Hayden! They didn't feel strong, back feels sore still today. Though I've been driving a lot today, so that could be contributing.

I'm adding some singles at the end of the third week. Will prob go up to 180kg this cycle, 190kg the next, then hopefully get the 200kg the end of the third cycle. I've lifted 180kgx3 before, so that's easy. And I've lifted 190kg for a single twice before, so that should go up too. 200kg will be a milestone for me, though, cos I've been chasing it for aaages!

Hey guys! Well, my gym partner is on late-shifts this week, which means we're less rushed. I shall charge the camera up tonight and get him to film me from tomorrow (Overhead Press Day).

    Squats 5/3/1 Week 2

    Squats:

    10x40(88)
    5x60(132)
    5x60(132)
    3x100(220)

    BBB Squats:

    10x80(176)
    10x80(176)
    10x80(176)

    Leg Curls:

    10x30(66)
    10x30(66)
    10x30(66)

    ----------
    Summary:

Tough session today. Really didn't feel like going in. Weather is crap, my lower back was hurting me and my training partner didn't turn up.

Went in anyway, weights won't lift themselves.

Got a random guy to film me on the final set. He picked a pretty bad angle. Granted, I wasn't going as low as I usually do (scared of hurting my lower back, as it was aching), but I was going lower than the video would suggest.

Combination of bad angle and my black jogging bottoms make it hard to tell.

Noticed that my knees were wobbling on a couple of reps - definitely need to keep that more in mind. Perhaps I might narrow my stance a bit.

Next week I shall drag my usual training partner along and get him to take a video from the side and much lower down.

BBB should have been at 72.5kg, but I was working in with the guy who filmed me, so I kept the weight at the same as he was using for his worksets (80kg), rather than messing around changing weights between each set.

The lying down leg curls hurt the backs of my knees, I don't enjoy them, but we don't have a seated leg curl at this gym.
