20 mins stretching and foam-rolling today. Been neglecting that a lot lately, need to get back in the habit.

    Summary:

Really good day today, second good bench session in a row, I think 5/3/1 really agrees with me when it comes to benching.

Very happy with the Bench PR, that's a huge rep PR for me.

Stretched and foam rolled before and after the session. Need to get back into it, want to be able to deadlift without hurting my lower back.

Thanks Brian! Bench is just coming together lately. Don't know why, but feeling a good arch, getting some good leg drive and staying nice and tight in my upper back.

I think the key was bringing my grip in an inch or so. Amazing how such a small change can make such a big difference to your entire set up.

Now I'm just hoping that my lower back is good tomorrow, so I can get a good rep PR on my deadlifts. Will be lifting 162.5kg on the 3+ set - would be nice to get 6 or 7 reps with it, but my back seems to be threatening to pull on me at about the 4th or 5th rep lately.

I've been rolling and stretching all this week, so hopefully that will have made a difference and will let me pull tomorrow without fear of injury.

    Cheers, Hayden!

I'm entering myself into a Push and Pull Competition that's next month (10th June).

    I would like a 100kg bench and a 200kg deadlift for that.

That's what I was thinking, Brian!

Got a condundrum though - just filling it out and it's asking me what weight class I want to enter.

Now, I just weighed myself ten seconds ago - I'm exactly 90kg, one month out.

Now, do I stick myself in at 90kg and hope that I can lose some weight just before the meet?

Or do I stick myself in at 100kg and omnomnomnom all the way to the meet to gain strength?

I'm not expecting to beat anyone at all at this meet, I'm only going for the experience.

I'd go with the cut IMHO. One month out, I don't feel the strength gains will be that drastic regardless if you cut/stay/bulk. But you did say it was just a push pull meet, so assuming not a full meet, right? In that case, you could just bulk and use it as part of your training platform. If it isn't an actual meet, and gaining more strength is a goal anyway, fuck it - bulk.

    Hey Rob, cheers!

Yeah, just a Push/Pull meet, so only Bench and Dead, not a full one, hence I won't be able to get a proper total.

I made an agreement with the wife that when I get a 220kg Deadlift, I will cut down to get teh abz.

Sounds like I should just go for it; I'm not gonna be at any real disadvantage by going up a class, as I'm not in it to win it anyway!

Exactly what im thinking. Its going to be way more important for you to get those lifts than it will be to fit in a class. Plus, stuffing face is awesome!

IMO, I would just maintain and do the 90kg weight class.

Haha! My thoughts exactly. As I said to Rob, 220kg Deadlift is the point where I agreed I'd start to cut. Hopefully I'm no more than a coupla months from that, who knows.

Hey Brian, yeah, guess I have. If it was a full-on meet, I'd probably cut, but it's only a push-pull. Also, looking at some of the people in the -90kg class, they're crazy strong - 3pps bench, 5pps squat and dead. I might be competitive by the end of the year, but certainly not now. Therefore I'm just in it for the experience, really.

Thanks Luna! Been reading a lot in the journals of some of the big benchers in here for hints and tips. All came together when I brought my grip in an inch or so, since then form's been getting better and better.

Also, back is pretty stiff today. Came on yesterday evening, right between the shoulder blades, think it's probably from all the rowing and benching.

Did some stretching and foam rolling before bed and some more just now as I got up.

Hoping it'll be alright in the gym for deadlifts, I'll just have to make sure that I warm up thoroughly.

Training partner not coming in again today, so I'll have to get a random gym-goer to film me again.

Back still really sore. I daren't risk going in for deadlifts and pulling it, not now I have a comp on the horizon.

Today was supposed to be start of my last week of the first cycle. Instead, Sunday will be, so NEXT Friday I shall be doing 1+ on Deadlifts.
