The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Its no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Glad to see you're liking the 5/3/1, if you want to maintain or build your maximal strength while keeping the same progress on everything else, what you can do is switch up the weeks and add some singles. What I typically do when I'm bulking is I start with 3x3 week and do 3 singles at 95% after my set of 3, which I won't push for more reps on (though if your last single feels easy you can push for 2 reps. Bench singles are always paused). Then normal 5s week, if you think you can handle it on the recovery or if 5 reps feels really easy you can push for more than 5 reps, entirely up to you. Then 5/3/1 week you can either do some more singles at 95% or test your max after your last work set. Deload week is the same as normal but with the reps 10/8/6 just because of personal preference, you can still do 5/5/5.

No joke, lol...good luck with the vehicle search, sounds like that's on the agenda.

Like how you resumed things with the heavier leg work.

Hey guys, thanks for the comments all. Looking forward to benching tomorrow.

On the car front, would you believe it but all it needs is two bulbs and the parking brake adjusting....

Looks like it'll just keep soldiering on!

I will be changing it in a coupla months, however. My mum's estate will be sorted soon and I'm due a decent sized inheritance, so planning on treating myself to a car. Most likely an Alfa Romeo, but will also be looking at Jaguars.

Benching Day, First Back After Deload

    Bench:

    10xbar
    10xbar
    5x40(88)
    5x60(132)
    5x80(176)
    1x90(198)
    1x100(220)PR

    BBB Bench:

    10x47.5(105)
    10x47.5(105)
    10x47.5(105)
    10x47.5(105)
    10x47.5(105)

    Tri Pulldown:

    10x40(88)
    10x50(110)
    10x60(132)
    10x72.5(160)PR

    Cable Curls:

    10x30(66)
    10x40(88)
    10x50(110)

    Cable Rows:

    10x40(88)
    10x60(132)
    10x60(132)

    ----------
    Summary:

    PR came out of nowhere.

Thought about what you guys said about adding in some singles, so after I got the prescribed reps I put 90kg on the bar; went up easy. So put 100kg on the bar, told my spot not to touch it; flew up too. Could have got it for a double, I reckon, but didn't want to push it.

Very chuffed - first time I've benched 2pps without an overzealous spot manhandling it up for me.

On a somewhat related note, just weighed myself - 92kg, or 202lbs. I'm happy with that as I'm only 5'6'', so I'm filling out my t-shirts very nicely!

All in all an unexpectedly good day as far as training goes!

Cheers Bako! And yeah our big plates (20kgs) are 1lb down on yours, 44 instead of 45. So our PPS lifts are always a few lbs different.

    First Deadlift Day of Cycle

    Deadlifts:

    10x60(132)
    5x60(132)
    5x100(220)
    5x117.5(259)

    BBB Deads:

    10x90(198)
    10x90(198)
    10x90(198)

    Barbell Rows:

    10x60(132)
    10x80(176)

    ----------
    Summary:

Tough session. Didn't get any sleep last night - hayfever kept me up from 4am. So was wiped before I even went in.

Got my reps. Pulled a heavier single, need to start getting used to them again. Will probably go for heavy singles again on the last week of the cycle - probably 190kg or maybe even 195kg for a PR.

Only did three sets of BBB as I was exhausted and wanted to get some Rows in.

Cheers April! And I'd like to, but car insurance is expensive in England. I do have a motorbike as well, in case the new one should need to go in the garage for any reason. However, my wife is learning to drive too, so hopefully we'll be getting her a car as well.

Haha, yeah. Problem is, the singles on 5/3/1 week are light. eg, the end of this cycle the program will have me pulling a 175kg single. 5kg lighter than what I've pulled for a triple before and 15kg lighter than I've pulled for a single.

    Squats!

    Squats:

    5x60(132)
    5x80(176)
    3x100(220)
    3x107.5(237)
    3x122.5(270)
    3x137.5(303)
    1x140(308)

    BBB Squats:

    10x77.5(170)
    10x77.5(170)
    10x77.5(170)
    10x77.5(170)
    10x77.5(170)

    Sumo SLDL:

    10x40(88)
    10x40(88)
    10x60(132)
    5x80(176)PR

    Abs:

    Twists x 40
    Ab Wheel Rollout 2x10
    Crunches x20

    ----------
    Summary:

    Great, albeit tough, session.

Squats felt okay. Depth is definitely a lot better than it used to be. Getting used to engaging glutes and keeping them tight all the way down. I find that if I forget about them and they're loose at the bottom then I get less 'bounce' if you get what I mean.

    BBBs kicked my arse.

Got a weight PR on the SLDLs. First set felt off and was tempted to not bother, but gave it another go tweaking my form - much better. If I don't get my setup right then I feel them only in the back and not in the legs.

Blasted the abs with a quick 5min session at the end, then was out of there.

Looking good Gazz! Making some good gains bro.

Check out this link for some info about 531 for powerlifting. Basically switches the 5's an 3's week around and you do a heavy single after those weeks.
