    600 LB Deadlift realistic?

    Hey all,

    I was curious to get some feedback from some of the good DLifters on this board.

    I am about 198 and pull raw 525-535. My best meet pull was 550(Metal suit) at a comp back in August. I have not maxed out recently. I am currently doing a program working on my lockout. I just did 520 raw standing on top of a 3 inch board. How realistic would a 600 DL be you think. Keep in mind I do pull conventional. I get good speed off the floor, but my lockout is weak.I am doing a ton of front squats and good mornings as well. Should I try Sumo? Would a Titan suit be better.

    Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    What kind of time frame? Anybody can pull 600lbs+ given enough training. I wouldn't worry much about the suit, Metal deadlift suits are top notch.

    Just keep training and constantly improving and strength will come over time. Its very difficult to predict how quick strength is going to be gained in the deadlift. If your weakness is the lockout I highly recommend doing pulls of of 3-6 inch blocks for triples. I have yet to find anything more effective for the lockout.

    Also - it sounds like you deadlift alot like me, conventional with a weak lockout. It can be a hard thing to fix but the block pulls along with learning how to really strain and fight the last few inches really help.

    Maybe within the next 6 months. I think i could 565-570 now. My form raw feels great, My suit throws me off sometimes too.

    I think if you address your weak areas and train smart, in 6 months you'll pull 600. Also, don't get all caught up with different deadlift suits or switching to sumo.

    if you want to do it and believe you can do it you will do it...

    i'm 6'1" tall and come in around 196lbs...I'm a rail...but I pulled mid 6's and am hoping to pull 7 at 198 in the fall. Right now I'm 230lbs thanks to the "off season". It's definately doable for a 198'er. The shorter you are the more you can pack muscle wise on that frame imho but biomechanics is biomechanics. Put all the natural odds in your favor...get your technique and form down for YOUR build and get at it. One day you'll be pulling and just out of the blue 600 will seem like a great idea and you'll pull it. End of story...

    Tweaking my starting position, adding in quad work, and doing rack pulls and deficit pulls has taken me from 600-700 in the gym this year. I pull conventional too.

    I'm not that strong, I'm not built to deadlift.... so if I can do it, so can you.

    Don't forget your heavy negatives too..... handle that weight.

    I'm kinda in the same boat...weak lockout strong off the floor conventional lifter. Stuck at around 560DL for a while now.

    I'm thinking about DLing from the floor maybe every 3 weeks and doing rack pulls/pulls against bands for the other weeks. Thoughts? Not sure if I should pull from floor every week...

    Sounds good to me, hope you dont mind me butting in.

    Deficit pulls, pulls from floor and from blocks all against bands will build a strong lock-out no question.

    +1 I'm in the same boat. Currently best pull was oct last year of 550#. Hoping to make 600 at a meet this summer and I'm really not built to deadlift. I have a really long torso with short arms and legs so deadlifting is a struggle.

    If you have short arms and suck at RDLs, try this volume cycle (ie not a peaking routine)
    Week 1-3: DE Day:Speed Pulls against minis, waving weights, followed by high rep RDLs; ME Day - Block Pulls for volume around sticking point
    Week 4: DE Day: No pulls, light high bar GM; ME Day - heavy triple for Deficit pulls
    Week 5 - 7: DE Day: Speed Pulls against lots of chain, waving weights, followed by high rep RDLs; ME Day - Block pulls for volume below sticking point
    Week 8: DE Day: No pulls, light high bar GM; ME Day - heavy single for Deficit
    Week 9-11: DE Day: Speed pulls with lightened method, waving weights, followed by stiff-legged DLs with opposite stance; ME Day - Block Pull
    Week 12: Max

    Us guys with bad leverage need to pull more frequently to keep form up, so plenty of speed pulls (singles). Block pulls will attack that lockout hard and RDLs will build the muscles that are needed to shove those hips through. If you're pulling sumo, make sure to do some erector work with the block pulls. But this should get you moving a lot faster through your sticking point. Heavy GMs can be substituted for block pulls if pulling twice a week is too much.

    I like to pull straight weight every week..... but not always heavy.

    I might start with a 4" deficit for 6 sets up to 405, then ditch the platform and go to 5 for speed work.

    I might work up to 405, then start adding band tension to work my speed..... I feel like bands DO help lockout, not the same way chains do, or rack pulls do.... just by adding weight...... but the way they add the weight teaches you to use speed through the pull.

    Or I might pull off the floor to 315, then start adding 2" blocks each set until I'm pulling from around knee level and go way over my max.


    The best advise I've ever gotten about deadlifting is that to be a great deadlifter you have to like deadlifting and have to work the **** out of it every chance you get.

    600 lb deadlift?

    Yes....you can pull 600.....my first deadlift was 415 and I worked my way up to 761 @ 184 lbs and 51 years old....drug-free. Have a plan.......work up to about 90-92% of your projected max for 2 reps.....8 - 10 days before your meet.....then pull your heavy triple for your opener.....your heavy double for your second and then go for it.....so maybe.......if you can triple 535....(1st attempt)....if you can double 575 ....(2nd attempt)....then rip up 600 or more!!     To echo other posters, I think a 600# is definitely achievable if you believe it.

    I know for myself, my mind is much stronger than my body--and my challenge is to enable my body to be as strong as it can via visualization/belief.

    As I'm working with my training partner and using the advice I've gotten on here to improve my form deadlifting, I feel others have/will give you much better advice on that.

    A question that came to my mind: What's your diet like?

    Do you have the normal powerlifting "see-food" diet or do you monitor what you eat?

    I ask because after failing @bodybuilding, I know the focus on nutrition has helped my powerlifting progress of late tremendously.

    Often, the words "bodybuilding" and "diet" conjure thoughts of boiled chicken breast and steamed veggies, so I should really say "eating plan."

    I've found having an eating plan that I know covers the protein/carbs/fat to make sure I recover has been a great asset.

    I eat more than my diet plan when I want, but make sure to follow a basic outline.

    As an update, I have been working sumo. Did 535x1 for an easy single the other week.

    I think 575 for my meet in April is possible.
