The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

It’s no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Check out my new IRON SUBCULTURE Podcast

Hi guys! I wanted to let everyone know I just launched a new bodybuilding and powerlifting podcast called Iron Subculture. You can check it out here:

    http://feeds.feedburner.com/iron_subculture

The Iron Subculture Podcast kicks off with an aggressive barrage of hardcore training and nutrition info! With over a dozen guests being grilled for info, you have no choice but to leave this podcast well-stocked with all the information and inspiration you need to force your training to the next level.

My two feature guests include contest diet expert Jeff Dwelle and Mike Tuchscherer. Mike Tuchscherer is the creator of the Reactive Training System and it has begun to make a HUGE impact on the training of powerlifters and strongman competitors (and is poised to change the way many bodybuilders plan their training). Since Mike is the first American to win a gold medal in powerlifting at the World Games, it obvious has worked well for him. Jeff Dwelle is not just one of the most successful contest prep coaches, he has put his techniques to the test on his own physique, winning a collection of trophies and Muscle & Fitness covers on his way. He lays down some real world wisdom that you can put to use immediately. Both these guys have not only put in the gym-time themselves, but they have honed their techniques on dozens of other athletes!

I also touch base with respected researcher Alan Aragon and discuss a pivotal study that may change your views on nutrient timing. We talk to Shelby Starnes about maintaining motivation and play a classic clip from a never-before-heard interview I did with Mr. Heavy Duty, Mike Mentzer. To add to the mix, I interrogate top experts and popular authors Bret Contreras, Dr. Clay Hyght and Scott Mendelson about some recent articles they have written (you learn as much from these follow-up interrogations as you did from their great writing).

We touch base with some of the world’s most interesting athletes as well. We talk to Martin Daniels, perhaps the top drug-tested bodybuilder currently competing; the most shredded contest veteran in the UK Paul George; fast-rising national-level threat Lee Alcorn; Westside Barbell’s Travis Bell tells us what Louie and the boys are up to; and we interview powerlifting’s demented duo, the Swole Patrol.

No wonder it’s a double-sized episode. There was just no way I could have packed this much raw sinew, aggression and explosive gut-punch info into a mere light-heavyweight ninety-minute package!

I look forward to feedback from you guys. I was a lot of work but I'm starting to get it down. Let me know what you think.

I'm a big fan of yours Steve. Every article you've written for the site I've greatly enjoyed. They have been well written and very accurate.

You can count on me tuning in to the podcasts. I hope others do as well.

Just finished up listening to it. It was good stuff. Lots of big names and left me with lots more articles and websites and people interviewed to further explore.

    I particularly enjoyed
    - The talk with Bret Contreras
    - The talk with Jeff Dwelle
    - The talk on dieting psyche, motivation, and how bad you want it with Shelby Starnes
    - The down to earth talk talk with Alan Aragon where they discussed a 1997 study of nutrient timing. I greatly agreed with Alan when he said the important thing to take away from the study was that timing [as far a greater amount of calories in the first half of the day vs second half of the day] was pretty unimportant. And further agreed when he delved into success with cutting off carbs in the evening being a product of behavior and not a superior physiological advantage.
    - And the talk with Mike Tuchscherer about his "reactive training system". I was completely unfamiliar with it but a lot of my own instinctual training would be closely related. It puts emphasis on doing big, hard work that you're capable of at the time. Not specifically counting sets and perhaps scaling back the workout based on factors like your work day or other outside factors.

    Thanks, Rory!

The podcast was designed to be listened to in iTunes, since it will allow images to display while you listen (like a PowerPoint presentation). Some people with older media players had some trouble so an having the web developer upload an MP3 version and will post that later.

For most though, that link (http://feeds.feedburner.com/iron_subculture) will either open it up in iTunes (either with the images and actives links if you have the newest version or just plain audio) or give you an one-click option to listen through your web browser.

    Fantastic listen, nice work!

Much appreciated, TK. I saw this morning that it has gone through the approval process so is now available on iTunes.

I had my web developer upload an MP3 version (it won't have the enhanced visual aspects but it shouldn't detract from the info). I will get it uploaded tomorrow for you.

Great stuff Steve. Read Mike Tuscherer's RTS a couple year's back and have been following it since and I had no idea he was so young!

Alan Aragon was good as usual and anyone who liked that should subscribe to his research review.

Did the Mike Mentzer interview get cut short?

Thank you, Daniel. No, I just wanted to present one point by Mentzer in the Classic Clip. The reasons are twofold: 1) As it is old info, a full 30 minute interview would seem a bit much, 2) Since it was an interview I did for a print article over the phone, the quality was mediocre, the flow jumps around since I was just making sure I got all the needed info and I never expected it to be heard by anyone but me. Plus, of course, all of Mike's fans have already heard his general tenets (but since he has been dead for a decade, it is nice to hear from him).
