Hello people. To start off, I am 16 years old. Have a year under my belt, although didn't get serious with lifting till about 6 months ago. Their is a local competition around me for Bench and Deadlift. My strongest lift is most definitely my bench press. I would compete at 198 lb weight class. My question is, do you think I could place with about a 235 paused bench at 198, and age 16. I'm not sure how many teens are competing in the weightclass, so I'm not sure of my competition. It will be my first competition, and I'd love to go and compete at what I love to do. Any responses are very helpful.
Get over the idea of wether or not you might place.....
Go compete, put 110% into, compete against yourself and nail a new PR.
You can not be worried about what others will lift or where you will rank.
There is no real way to say for sure but based on the competitions that I have attended I would think that you would definitely place for that.
Even if you diddnt it would be a great start and would get you a competition under your belt, so you at least know what to expect for future events.

Always compete against yourself. I have not kept a trophy in years. I give them to kids. The pride I feel from accomplishing my goals far outweighs any trophy I have ever gotten. Now cash, that's a different story.
Lift hard and have fun. Once you are on the platform, you have already won.

The goal is lift more than you have in the past-placings depend on who else shows up and if they make their attempts.
I agree with the ohers here, placing just depends on who shows up. I could go to a small meet and take 1st with a performanc I'm unhappy with, or show up at a big time meet and take 3rd on my best day; I'd rather have my best performance regardless of outcome. Powerlifting is a very different sport in this regard, if someone is 100 lbs stonger than you no plan, strategy, or circumstance will change that on that day. Start with this meet and build yourself to be the best you can be over time. Trophies are great the first couple times, but most lifters that have gone far don't care about trophies after the first couple they get.

Focus on not bombing out. Not on numbers. If you are looking at 235 open at 175 or so. Get in the meet.
