The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Okay today was my first workout I will keep in the journal. I went with 2 friends to checkout a gym close to my house because working in the basement just doesn't give me everything I need. We did manage to snag 1 week passes and I liked the gym but I'm not about to pay 49 a month. Workout was much different then normal. My friends had to do all these bicep/chest workouts. Go figure. (They did have a terrible time keeping up with the squats tho and they each have easily 20lbs on me).

    Squats:
105 x 5 (Could do more but Im really working on form with this)
    105 x 5
    105 x 5

    Bench:
    95 x 5 (This is up 25lbs since I started!)
    95 x 5
    95 x 5

    BB Rows:

    65 x 5 (wayyy too easy)
    95 x 5
    95 x 5

    Hammer Curls:
    25s x 5
    25s x 5
    25s x 5

    Dips:
    BW x 8
BW x 6 (not enough rest)

Did a couple other random bicep/tricep/chest things that make my arms feel like they were going to explode (not gonna lie it felt great)... pretty good day today. Need to find a better gym tho. If it was up to me I wouldnt have done most of the accessory work I did but my friends insisted.

Ill get some pictures up soon so we all know what we are dealing with here. Thanks for reading!

    Bench Press:
    95 x 5
    95 x 5
    100 x 5 (PR)

    Deadlift:
    140 x 5

    Dips:
    BW x 10 (PR)
    BW x 10

    Chinups:
    BW x 10 (PR)
    BW x 8

    Hammer Curls:
    25s x 10 (uhhh lol)
    30s x 5
    30s x 5 (honestly felt pretty easy)

Various ab workouts with BW + 25. Im gonna start adding weight to my dips and chinups as well.

Today was an amazing day for me. I got news that I passed my emt national certification test. So Im a registered emt now and my stuff is coming in the mail.

Yesterday after some research I ordered some creatine 500, and some Nitrean. And to my suprise it shipped several hours after the order on a sunday! Niceeee.

Workout wasnt bad either. Deadlifts are a pain in the ass when im stuck at my house cause the highest weight i have is 25 so i have to go extra low. Benchpress is slowing down too but I managed to get 100x5 which I had never done before. I feel like i should be doing more tho i definately have a weakness and im not 100% sure what it is. Ive got pretty good form but i think my left arm is just way weaker than my right cause it slows me way down. Might start some barbell workouts for a week or so.

Also since I try and do full body workouts I do them every other day. But I do not take a 2 day rest ever could this cause me to overtrain? Should I just be doing Mon/Wed/Fri and take 2 days off after friday or is it safe to do them every other day indefinately? I havent noticed a problem yet. Still eating fine, still sleeping fine, and my lifts are gradually going up. Thanks

Our stats are very very similar, besides age.
I started late febuary at a weight of 124, and after a couple weeks was very close to the weight u are at now. Also started with an 85 pound 1 rep max on bench.

    You are moving up quickly.

whats your diet like, and do you have a set routine?
    21 | 6'1 | 180lbs
    Bench Press-165*7 | Squat-205*8 |Deadlift-205*5

Yeah i got ya beat on age there :P no big deal tho I look young. My routine is pretty much

    a: squat, bench, dead
b: squat, military press, barbell rows

I throw in some accessory excercises as i feel fit. My 1rm max on the 13th was 100lbs with the bench so im way happy with hitting that mark with 5 reps today. I havent been able to stick to my routine as much as I have wanted because I dont have a gym membership yet so I have to do some workouts at my house (no squats) and some at a friends (no dips). I really need some other stuff so i can throw in better excercises to hit my weak spots.

As far as diet i try to eat small meals every few hours but I really dont worry too much about eating fat or carbs just focus on getting plenty of protein. I have a insanely fast metabolism and i could probably eat lard all day and stay about 130. Its my curse.

    Military Press:
75 x 5 (PR! But i felt like i was going to drop the weight on my head)
    65 x 5
    65 x 5

    Squat:
    95 x 5
    105 x 5
    95 x 5 ATF

I get really sore after like the first squat on the upper inner part of my legs. I did 95 again with my feet pointed a little less outward maybe 20-30% and went as far down as possible and it felt much better. But im going to have to use a little less weight maybe to get used to it.

    Bench Press:
    95 x 5
    115 x 1 (PR!)
    115 x 5 (Negatives)
    115 x 5 (Negatives)

    Abs

    Dips:
    BW+25 x 3 (PR!)
    BW+15 x 5
    BW+15 x 5

    Pullups:
    BW x 3
BW x 3 (These are way harder than chins)

    Calf Raises:
    90 x 5
    90 x 5
    90 x a whole bunch

    Bicep Curls:
    55 x 5
    55 x 5
    55 x 5

Overall a pretty solid workout for waking up at 9:00 and getting to the gym at 9:30. I probably should go maybe an hour or 2 later so that I have time to get in a meal before I go. The gym had a dip belt which made me pretty happy. I coulda done reps of 5 probably with the 25 but I was pretty tired and shoulda eaten. Oh well there is always friday. Im gonna start pumpin out those pullups (i think they are pullups... the ones with the palms facing away from you?). Anyways my friend I go with to the gym is one of those curl monkeys who had only done upper body stuff when he used to workout so I probably did 3 different types of bicep excercises. Im trying to ween him away from that tho haha. You should see his skinny little legs try and squat.. and i brought up the word deadlift and he got scared. Friday ill show him whats up.

I want that 135! And no I was doing it with the ezcurl bar, which i think is 15lbs, on the other side of the room. I would have yelled at myself if i was doing curls in the power rack haha. I got my nitrean and creatine today too so im pretty pumped for tomorrows workout.. well im always pumped for it but even more now.

I would have to say dont worry about over training at this point you wont be able to over train...honestly even if you trained full body every day (not that im telling you to do that) the term is over used and when you first start your body can handel alot more then you realize it can
once you have been doing it a while you will be able to gage when your body needs an extra day off
    If you want to prevail
    Ignore the known road
    and BlaZE your own trail

Just go crazy . Just be smart about it though. When the overtraining starts, you'll know, but it shouldn't happen for a while.

Congratulations on the bench PR too, put those babies in RED, haha. Try some stretching for the squat soreness. It'll go away.

Stepto Okay thanks I was really worried about that thanks for clearing it up.

Bako Lifter I wont go tooo crazy but I might throw in a few extra visits to the gym and see how it affects me. I might put them in blue.. or green just to mix it up a little!

Also with a little input from some people I think these are the goals I want to achieve.

    Short(Hopefully by August) - 205s/135b/270d
    Long(Close to by 6/3/08) - 275s/200b/350d

Those dont seem to unreasonable to me.

    Squats:
    115x5
    125x1
    135x1
155x0 (shoulda had it but I wasnt in the right mindset)
    145x1 (PR!)

    Bench:
    95x5
    105x5
    100x5

    Dips:
    BW+25 x 5 (PR!)
    BW+25 x 3 (didnt wait long enough)
    BW+25 x 5

    Abs

    Deadlift:
    135x1
    185x1
    205x1 (PR!)
215x0 (missed wayyy too tired from maxin squats)

    Bicep Excercises

    Thoughts:
I did more squats then I listed I just dont remember what weights I did cause I dont take paper with me to the gym I was just doing it from my head. I did get 2 new maxes but I definately shoulda have tried to max 2 different excercises on 2 different days oh well. My dips are pretty beastly (or at least I feel so) I dont know why my bench is low maybe I need to hit my back cause I think my triceps are pretty strong. I did go checkout a new gym which is only 99 for a year for students and is better than the one im using this week so ill probably go with that one they have a nice free weight room as well but no dip belt so Ill have to buy one.

way to keep moving the weights up man, you'll get to your goals before you even notice it. Great dips btw, once you get used to benching i'm sure your gains will sky rocket.

Im going to try and find a happy medium but id like to lift big weights and look bigger and better. So far my weights have gone up and since im a relatively small guy my arms/chest/legs are getting bigger so hopefully this continues.

    Squats:

    115x5
125x3 (compromising form so i stopped)

    Military Press:
    60x5

    60x5

    Bench:
    95x5
    100x5
    100x5

    Dips:
    BW x 10
    BW x 10
    BW x 8 (so tired)

    Bicep Excercises

    Thoughts:
This new gym is pretty sweet so after I use my 3 free days im going to sign up for it. Ill need to buy my own dip belt but thats no biggie. Thats also why I wasnt doing weighted dips this time. Woke up and went straight to the gym with no meal and just noxplode so that could account for my getting tired early. My bench is slowing down but its still going up. I think i really need to hit my back hard to get that number to keep goin up. Think some of these will work?

    Squat:
    115 x 5
    105 x 5
    105 x 5

    Bench:
    95 x 5
    100 x 5
    100 x 5

    Deadlift:
    135 x 5
    135 x 5

    Dips:
    BW x 10
    BW x 10
BW+25 x 5 (Held a dumbell with my feet. It sucked... Dip Belt? Anybody?)

    Thoughts:
Not the greatest workout but pretty solid and consistant. Went to a sporting goods store before hand to try and pickup a dip belt. They had none, gay. With my squats I feel like my form is pretty good. But I do get really really sore in the inner part of my thigh. Well its not quite inner but its not quite the back of my leg and I cant tell if its my hammys or my adductors. I dont do wide stance squats so I dont understand why I would get such a sore feeling in the inner part. Im not very familiar with muscles.. so it might be my hammys lol any help is appreciated. Oh and I had been doing deads in sets of 1 so I did a set of 5 to work on controlling the weight back down to the floor hopefully that will help me in the long run.

EDIT: I did some looking around and feeling around on my legs and its on the back of my leg and towards the midline of the body its about as close to the inside of your leg as u can get without going to the inner part of the thighs. So its prob hammys.

EDIT#2: The more I think about it when I descend I think I might point my knees outward too much. Could this cause these other muscles to get sore?

Abductors are up by the hips, find a picture online and circle where u feel the pain?

Anyways, Why aren't u bumping the weight up on your bench?

    BCorn Thanks! And I will

Small Ill try and find a picture because it really bothers me I might actually lay off the squats cause I feel im not making progress because of the pain that is causes. Ive been trying to stick with the same amount for a few days to work on my form. Wasnt feeling 100% today.

But on a side note Transformers was amazing.

EDIT: K here is a pic with it highlighted. It goes a little under my leg as well. Its not my leg either hahaha just one i found online.
