The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

I was actually shocked how much more rom I got after I'd done one side. Really grind the triceps into the bar. It makes so much difference.
Thanks JC.... I'll give that a go next time.

    WEDNESDAY 16th NOVEMBER

1st session for 2 weeks as really busy at work (and I had a mega pissup in London last weekend for a remebrance service!).

    Run (warm up):
5 minute jog to the gym

    Front Squats:
    5 x 5 @ 100kg (220lbs)

NOTE: tried grinding my triceps into the bar before to help arm position as per a link sent by JC 2 weeks ago and I did notice a difference. I had been using an overhand grip (to hold the bar into my throat) before so hadn't had any problems with my wrists (just got pulled forward a lot!) so this was really my 1st experience of wrist pain and they took a kicking! That also stopped me from getting down as low as I had been previously... all in I don't think I'm built for front squats much above this weight; I reached my target of 5 x 5 @ 100kg and it's back squats from now on!

    Bench Press:
    1 x 5 @ 87.5kg
    1 x 2 @ 87.5kg & 1 x 3 @ 85kg
    1 x 4 @ 85kg
    1 x 3 @ 82.5kg & 1 x 3 @ 80kg
    1 x 5 @ 80kg

NOTE: definitely felt the 2 weeks off!

    DLs:
    5 x 1 @ 180kg - 1st rep without Power Grabs *grip PB!

NOTE: form felt good and I probably could've gone for a 1RM but I stuck with the plan.

Thanks JC. The DL seems to benefit from a break but my bench definitely doesn't!

    SUNDAY 20th NOVEMBER

    Run (warm up):
5 minute jog to the gym

    Back Squats:
    1 x 5 @ 120kg
    1 x 5 @ 150kg - nowhere near parallel
    1 x 5 @ 140kg - ditto!
    2 x 5 @ 130kg - better but still not parallel
    1 x 5 @ 120kg

NOTE: 1st time with back squats for a while and the 1st doing them with a belt; lot of work to do here! 11 months ago I was doing good sets at 150kg... left ankle felt a bit tight today but loosened up after 10 minutes.

    Bench Press:
    1 x 5 @ 80kg
    1 x 4 @ 80kg
    1 x 5 @ 70kg
    1 x 4 @ 70kg

NOTE: after the disappointment of the other day I was just going to do 5 x 5 @ 80kg but struggled with that. My right arm didn't feel right so I dropped to 70kg to concentrate on form but called it a day when I couldn't manage a set at that!

    DLs:
Did a load of singles and worked up to 200kg for the 1st time in months (previous PB ) It wasn't pretty but was smooth for the 1st part... I just had to fight to lock it out. Managed it... HAPPY!
Should've stopped there as my left shoulder didn't feel great but pushed on for a new PB and failed at 205kg... oh well!
After watching Jay's link on Dimmel DLs I think I'll give them a go to help my lockout.

Ah well, you can't rush these things! 120kg is still more than a lot of people squat so if you can get good fast sets with that, then just hit it and progress up in 5kg increments. You'll be at an honest 150 in a month or so. Good news about the deadlifts. I'm looking forward to getting 200kg.

    TUESDAY 22nd NOVEMBER

    Run (warm up):
10 minutes of 5-a-side football (soccer)

    Back Squats:
    3 x 5 @ 120kg

    NOTE: taking it slow!

    Dimmel DLs:
    1 x 20 @ 60kg
    1 x 20 @ 80kg
    1 x 10 & 5 & 5 @ 100kg

NOTE: lower back was still a bit tender from the DLs on Sunday but I still gave these a good go... hopefully my DL lockout will improve if I keep doing them and my PB will go up.

    Bench Press:
    5 x 10 @ 50kg

NOTE: slow down and fast up to concentrate on form... kept the weight down after the discomfort I felt in my right arm the other day.

    Dorian Yates Rows:
    5 x 5 @ 80kg

NOTE: holding 1 second at the top.

Cheers Jay, it WAS a struggle! Getting more workouts in right now as I'm on a course so away from the submarine for a week (so I can't actually do any of my own work)... not that I'm complaining!

Really enjoying those Dimmel DLs by the way, though I'm not sure what's a good weight... 105 for 20 was hard work but I think I can push that a bit more.

WEDNESDAY 30th NOVEMBER - HAPPY ST. ANDREW'S DAY!

    Back Squats:
    3 x 5 @ 120kg

NOTE: got nice and deep. Probably gonna stick at this weight for another week or so and concentrate on getting comfortable as low as possible (ankle felt nice and loose this evening).

    DLs:
    worked up to 1 @ 180kg
F @ 180kg - no gloves, chalk or wraps and the bar was just slipping out of my hands
    F @ 170kg - ditto
    10 @ 100kg

NOTE: wasn't confident that this was going to be a good DL day as my back was still tender from Monday... grip didn't help so called it a night.

Yeah, that was all I was planning on doing as I'd had an arm session the previous day... only problem was I'd been eating like a BEAST all day as I was planning on doing more (though not necessarily heavier) DLs!

Don't worry mate, it must be tough organising training around your work.

Your strength is never going to go down too much. Just make it count when you do get to the gym.

    FRIDAY 30 DECEMBER

    DB Lat Raises:
    3 x 21 @ 5kg (7 straight / 7 pronated / 7 supinated)
    2 x 21 @ 7.5kg (7 straight / 7 pronated / 7 supinated)

NOTE: thought these felt easier than normal tonight then realised at the end of the 3rd set that I'd only been using the 5kg DBs instead of the 7.5kgs that I normally use (I know that 7.5kgs isn't heavy but it's heavy enough for me when doing sets of 21)!

DB Front Raises SS with DB Press:
    1 x 10 @ 10kg & 1 x 10 @ 15kg
    1 x 10 @ 15kg & 1 x 10 @ 20kg
    1 x 10 @ 15kg & 1 x 10 @ 20kg

EZ Bar Overhead Tricep Extension SS with EZ Bar Curls:
    1 x 30 @ 20kg & 1 x 30 @ 20kg
    3 x 10 @ 35kg & 3 x 10 @ 35kg

DB Tricep Kickbacks SS with DB Bentover Curls:
    1 x 10 @ 15kg & 1 x 10 @ 10kg
    1 x 10 @ 20kg & 1 x 10 @ 10kg
    1 x 10 @ 20kg & 1 x 10 @ 15kg

NOTE: Another quick workout in my garage... haven't managed to do much since last week (too knackered for a couple of days after the 1,000 mile round trip in 34 hours then too busy with the kids with WAY too much food and drink consumed (it WAS Christmas!)).

As a good Scotsman, I'd like to wish all of you a very happy New Year... my kilt is ready and the fridge is FULL of booze!
