The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Bench Press (fast):

    3 x 20 @ 20kg
    10 @ 40kg
    5 @ 50kg
    5 @ 60kg
    5 @ 70kg

Bench Press superset with DB Flyes:

    5 @ 80kg & 10 @ 14kg
    2 x 5 @ 80kg & 10 @ 16kg - 2nd set a real struggle!
    2 x 5 @ 70kg & 10 @ 14kg

Note: had intended to also do incline and decline press tonight but really struggled with these so stopped here; been busy at work and at home so have only managed to get into the gym twice in the last 2 weeks... add to that the fact that I haven't been getting much sleep in that timeframe and I haven't been supplementing as much and everything is going to suffer. must try harder!

    CGBP:

    20 @ 20kg
    5 @ 40kg

    CGBP superset with Skullcrushers:

    5 @ 60kg & 10 @ 30kg
    7 @ 60kg & 10 @ 30kg - got to 5 on the CGBP and thought "fuck it I'll do 10!"... then only got to 7! oh well!
    4 @ 60kg & 10 @ 30kg
    5 @ 57.5kg & 10 @ 30kg - last couple of skullcrushers were HARD!
    4 @ 55kg & 4 @ 30kg - weak on the skullcrushers tonight!

Rope Pushdowns (1 sec hold at bottom):

    10 @ 30kg - not pronating on the last 3 reps
4 x 10 @ 25kg - was engaging lats on last couple of reps of last set

    V Bar Pushdowns: (fast)

    10 @ 40kg
    10 @ 45kg
    10 @ 50kg
    9 @ 55kg
    10 @ 55kg
    9 @ 60kg

    Kneeling Cable Crunches:

    20 @ 75kg
    20 @ 85kg
    2 x 15 @ 90kg
    10 @ 90kg

Note: I weigh 93kg at present and my knees were lifting off the deck as I was driving down at 90kg... hard going!

I can't do decline press at all. Kills my lower back! Same reason I bench flat with no arch.

I find it depends on the bench. the benches in the gym at work are comfortable when declined, as are those at the gym I occasionally go to near home, but I'm not so confident on my own bench in the garage when it's on the decline... I've only used it that way once, so maybe I just need to get used to the slightly different feel of it.

I tend to keep my back flat against the bench as much as possible. if I ever get the opportunity to do a comp then I will probably try to learn to arch to see if it helps.

    Squat:

    3 x 20 @ 20kg
    10 @ 60kg
    5 @ 100kg
    5 x 3 @ 120kg
    5 @ 100kg
    10 @ 60kg

    Note: good speed and depth.

    SLDL superset with Calf Raises:

    10 @ 100kg & 12 @ 150kg
    10 @ 120kg & 12 @ 150kg
    5 @ 130kg & 12 @ 150kg
    5 @ 140kg *PR & 12 @ 150kg
    3 @ 150kg *PR & 12 @ 150kg

Note: 140kg for 5 is my previous best for SLDL but yesterday was from a 1.5" deficit so this was a new PR... until I then went for 150kg (was going for 5 reps but 3 was more than enough!) happy

no belt or wraps/Power Grabs for this session.

if only that were true Jay! I really wanted to hit it hard in the few weeks after Smolov to capitalise as much as possible on the work I'd done but I've been travelling a lot recently and we've had a couple of programme changes that have kept everyone busy (this was supposed to be a week off work for me!)

    Squat (warmup):

    20 @ 20kg - narrow stance
    20 @ 20kg - wide stance ATG
    20 @ 20kg - narrow stance
    20 @ 20kg - wide stance ATG

Note: had intended to do this whole session narrow stance ATG but I can barely get to parallel with just the bar when narrow stance!

decided to go back to wide stance and start 5/3/1 again but go ATG instead of just to parallel as I was before.

Squat (5/3/1 Cycle 1 Week 1 - Wide Stance ATG):

    5 @ 60kg
    5 @ 75kg
    3 @ 90kg
    5 @ 97.5kg
    5 @ 112.5kg
    6 @ 125kg

Note: good speed up to last set... only 85% of 1RM but this was hard going as that 1RM is to parallel only.

    Bench (warmup):

    3 x 20 @ 20kg - fast

    Bench (5/3/1 Cycle 1 Week 1):

    5 @ 35kg
    5 @ 45kg
    3 @ 55kg
    5 @ 57.5kg
    5 @ 67.5kg
    10 @ 77.5kg

Note: all paused at stops 1" above chest

    CGBP (5/3/1 Cycle 1 Week 1):

    5 @ 32.5kg
    5 @ 40kg
    3 @ 47.5kg
    5 @ 52.5kg
    5 @ 60kg
    6 @ 70kg

Note: all paused at stops 1" above chest

    Deadlift (5/3/1 Cycle 1 Week 1):

    5 @ 80kg
    5 @ 100kg
    3 @ 120kg
    5 @ 130kg
    5 @ 150kg
    3 @ 170kg

Note: from a 1.5" deficit and without belt or wraps.

I was a little bit disappointed to only get 3 on the last set but I don't normally do this kind of volume on deadlifts and I was struggling by then.

not been getting into the gym as much as I'd like recently, not been getting the supplements down as much, not sleeping brilliantly and I feel like I'm coming down with a cold... I suppose none of that helped!

used a new bar too and it felt like it was made of barbed wire... my hands are raw now (I know... MTFU Mac! )

Bent Over Row (5/3/1 Cycle 1 Week 1):

    5 @ 32.5kg
    5 @ 40kg
    3 @ 47.5kg
    5 @ 52.5kg
    5 @ 60kg
    6 @ 70kg - Grip!

Note: 1 second pause at top

Standing Overhead Press (5/3/1 Cycle 1 Week 1):

    5 @ 20kg
    5 @ 25kg
    3 @ 30kg
    5 @ 32.5kg
    5 @ 40kg
    11 @ 45kg

    Note: all strict

    Kneeling Cable Crunches:

    20 @ 75kg
    20 @ 85kg
    15+5 @ 90kg - Grip!
    20 @ 90kg - Power Grabs on
    20 @ 90kg

    Foam Roll:

my left hip has been 'funny' since I did the Smolov Base Cycle and I thought it was just my age before I realised it was my ITB.

haven't used the foam roller in while and... OMFG!! I had forgotten just how brutally painful that is on the ITB!!

I watched a vid on youtube and the guy was on about splitting the ITB into 3 and, starting on the lower third and working up, spending about 10 minutes on each... that was NOT going to happen last night!! I did about 10 seconds on each and that was more than enough for me!

I'll take advice on this from anyone.

And I hear you on the foam roller - very painful! I don't know how people can use it for so long at a time!

cheers Jay. I'd like to do a bit less in each session and get into the gym more regularly but that isn't happening at the moment and I'm not sure if I'm doing too much in each session... what do you reckon?

looks fine to me mate, theres an actual 2 day a week wendler template that is very similar to how you're doing it. Squat bench one day, OHP and pull the other. Pretty simple and effective. As long as you feel good and keep battling with that roller and picking the fork up regularly you should be fine buddy!
