The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Couldn't agree more Mark! Luckily this guy tells it straight... not sure if it's just the way he is or because he has a military background.

We've used them for curls, skulls and flys. I try to do as few chest flys as I can get away with using free weights since I always worry about my left anterior pec, I've had issues with it in the past but with chains I don't feel as compromised since it's lighter at the bottom.

Makes sense. I'm looking forward to using them more.

    MONDAY 16 DECEMBER

    Deadlift (5/3/1 - C3, W1):

    5 @ 82.5kg
    5 @ 102.5kg
    3 @ 125kg
    5 @ 135kg - chalk
    5 @ 155kg - belt on
    (5+ @ 85%) 12 @ 175kg (385lbs)

Note: to match the estimated 1RM from my 7 @ 192.5kg 12 days ago I needed 11 reps.. first 10 reps were in very quick succession. had to re-chalk and take a minute for breath before the last 2!

    gives a new theoretical 1RM of 244.5kg!

need to test soon as I can't keep this volume on my top set... took me 10 minutes to catch my breath after that!

    wish I'd videoed it!

    Speed Deadlifts:

3 x 3 @ 120kg - speed is my weakness... need to work on it!

    BB Curls:

    30 @ 20kg - get the blood pumping

Bent Over BB Fat Gripz Curls:

7 @ 35kg - weak! even worse than last week!
    12 @ 32.5kg
    12 @ 32.5kg
    9 @ 32.5kg
    10 @ 30kg

    Note: 1130 tempo

DL for reps is killer, but it has adds to much to potential growth and carryover. I'm planning on hitting my speed sets again at 60% 4 sets of 8 in the near future. Don't need cardio with sessions like that.

You can say that again! I blowing harder and longer after that set than I was after my last annual fitness test (bleep test)!

    WEDNESDAY 18 DECEMBER

    Squats:

    3 ◊ 20 @ 20kg - loosen up

    Goblet Squat Hip Rotations:

    3 ◊ 10 seconds @ 15kg

Note: don't know what these are actually called but I've been doing for my poor hip mobility since coach showed me on Saturday... really feel them in my hips, groin, glutes and ITBs.

    Low Bar Squats (5/3/1 - C3, W1):

    5 @ 65kg
    5 @ 80kg
    3 @ 97.5kg - wrist supports on
    5 @ 105kg
5 @ 122.5kg - moved fast enough but felt heavy!
    12 @ 137.5kg - belt on

Note: wrists were sore earlier than usual in this session!

videoed sets 5 & 6 (will try to upload later) and I don't think I hit depth for a single rep on the last set!

also, I left the rear hooks on my rack down from benching yesterday and only noticed on the last set when the bar caught on the first 4 reps so had to then take a little step forward... donkey!

    DB Split Squats:

    3 ◊ 10 (each leg) @ 15kg (each hand)

    Note: 1st time trying these

    RDLs:

    10 @ 70kg
    10 @ 100kg
    10 @ 120kg

Note: slightly less weight than I normally do for these, and with a reduced ROM... but much better form!

Here's the video of the disappointing squat session the other night (wife talking to me about washing up was also disappointing):

I felt a bit under the weather since the last session (probably from before as I had a bit of a cough) so I've done nothing since except rest, eat and take loads of vitamin C. Feeling better now and may repeat this session tomorrow.

Good effort dude, especially if you werent feeling 100 per cent. Depth was an issue in the set on video but no doubt you'll smash it next time!

cheers fellas! didn't manage to squat (or even get in the gym yesterday) as we had a leak in the dining room! worst of the weather has passed for now so the leak has stopped but if the weather returns then I'm sure the dining room ceiling will come down... please let us get through Christmas first!

I'll probably re-do that session after Boxing Day!

    FRIDAY 27 DECEMBER

Repeat of the disappointing session on the 18th!

Goblet Squat Hip Rotations superset with Low Bar Squats:

    3 ◊ 10 figures of 8 @ 15kg & 3 ◊ 20 @ 20kg - loosen up

    Low Bar Squats (5/3/1 - C3, W1):

    5 @ 65kg - deep, explosive
    5 @ 80kg - deep, fast
    3 @ 97.5kg - wrist supports on - deep, fast
    5 @ 105kg - deep, speed still ok
    5 @ 122.5kg - belt on - deep, speed alright
8 @ 137.5kg - good depth on first 4, last couple to parallel... 8th rep a real fight and only just to parallel, but I'm counting it!

Note: much happier with this session!

    video of set 6:

    DB Split Squats:

    3 ◊ 10 (each leg) @ 15kg (each hand)

    RDLs:

Looking good Mac. I like reverse band benching so long as it doesn't turn in to an ego lift. I only allow myself to work with weight that I'm aiming to hit within 6 months for my 1RM. It gets rid of that fear when you take the weight out if you work with it some before actually benching it. Same with squats for me as well.
