    Behind the back barbell shrug

What's the consensus here? I've never done them this way, nor have I ever seen anyone doing them this way.

I use a Smith machine version. This video is of a much more ballistic version although you can also do it strictly. The Smith allows you to lean forward and thus clear your ass more easily.

    Thanks Chris,

I'll give it a shot. I've done behind-the-back, but always with straight arms... same was I do the regular shrugs. It seems like it would be stressful on the shoulder and elbows, but the "ballistic" version looks stressful everywhere.

i have noticed more growth doing them in the front, my lifting partner does behind the back. his traps are smaller and uses dumbells 20-30lb dumbells lighter than me. go with the front

you should help your lifting partner instead of bashing him on the forum...

The shrug/row looks like it could be a good option since it would limit the amount of weight used and force the trainee to have a bit more control and to isolate their traps. I would also give it a try with a smith machine since like Chris said it would allow you to clear your backside.
