The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

It’s no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Why Deload?

    By Mike Scialabba,

After several weeks of consistently taxing the CNS and musculo-skeletal system with intense resistance training, two (of many) things begin happening. First, your nervous system gets fatigued, and struggles to recover efficiently, and secondly, the muscular gains begin exceeding the growth within the connective tissue. (ie. Fascia, tendons, and ligaments).

Connective tissue has an incredibly poor blood supply compared to muscle tissue, therefore the growth and adaptation to the demands being placed on the body within the connective tissue are not as efficient as the muscles, causing an imbalance of strength and increased risk for injury.

Removing or reducing the load for a short stint of time can have a dramatic affect on recovery, and a dramatic affect on your gains in the gym.

If long term gains and a pain free body are goals of yours, take seriously the deload!

This was in the latest ALN/WBB newsletter. I just wanted to post it for discussion.

Most think in terms of their muscle recovery or taxing their CNS. But rarely do I see talk of under-recovered connective tissue. Something to think about...

I'm all but certain this is what happened to my chest. I opted to not deload because of the gains, and felt I didn't have any trouble, the next week boom...came home and was in some pretty severe pain, now after a few days rest last week, I went right back at it, and now it's back. Taking an entire week off now because I HAVE to, but it would have been much better to take the week of and deload because I WANTED to, laying in bed and not being able to move my right arm without pain certainly isn't any fun.
