The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

It’s no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Great workout, especially those dips. I am going to focus on my dips a lot more, I think they are so helpful.

Trained with one of our guys doing work experience at our gym today. So went hard. Loved it as gave me some big motivation to push out some good reps & teach him some great exercises... One of my favourite sessions for a long time.

    DE Lower

Speed Band Squats All sets bar&plate weight only. Doubled pink bands used as per set up shown earlier.
    Bar * 5, * 5
80kg (176lbs) * 2 - 11 sets (did an extra as was taking video for form check)
Also did five sets of five reps on box jumps, done after every two sets of speed squats

Goodmornings - focussing on depth an hip drive at the top.
    80kg (176lbs) * 15 - 5 sets.

    Hamstring Curls / Pull Throughs
    80kg (176lbs) * 8 - 3 sets / 66kg (145lbs) * 15 - 3 sets

    Leg Extension / Calf Raises
    100kg (220lbs) * 15 - 3 sets / 108kg (238lbs) * 10 - 3 sets
Then did a fourth set of leg extensions starting at a 100kg an doing dropsets (down 10kg per set) right down to 10kg. So hard. Did sets of max reps all the way down, got my pump on lol loved it

DIY Reverse Hypers / Bicycle Crunches
    * 15 - 3 sets / * 30 - 3 sets

Loved it. Will edit my vids of Speed Squats to get some form feedback an post it up later on! Great session. Now getting a feed in!

Thanks Tom! It was a killer. Struggled to push out 20 with the 10kg at the end. Was tough as but a good mix up to my usual sets.

Nice job getting into the shert mate. What fed are you lifting in? You could change a lot of things but first of all you need to know what is allowed and what isnt. Most importantly, if your feet have to be flat and where you can touch. Try pulling a bigger arch and force your belly right up. Easier if you get your feet right underneath you. Try and think as if you were trying to get your feet towards your shoulders and your shoulders towards your feet (angle right up on your traps before you get your feet set). Squeeze the shit out of the bench with your knees and force your heels down (if they are up). You should get your leg drive going through the whole movement. Dont just try and engage it when you go to press. You need to be tight the WHOLE time. If you go flat footed with your feet in front then you will try and push through your toes instead. Take the widest grip possible, index on ring. Did I mention get tight? Squeeze the shit out of EVERYTHING. You should get tight enough that just releasing your set up afterwards is a huge relief. If it aint tight, it aint right.

But, great efforts to start with mate. From personal experience, just handling the heavier weight WILL have a direct carry over to your raw work. Sorry for the block of words. Hope it makes sense. I am far from a good bencher but I train with some and all this advice has helped me along the way. Peeps like Brian C, NickAus and Big Brian Hopper have some excellent advice on here too and they are always willing to help.

Take one thing at a time and work on it. It will become second nature.

Thanks for the tips Justin. I will read an re-read that advice again very helpful. I am lifting in IPF, the only one we have down here in NZ! What does taking the widest grip do mate?

IPF means you will need to be flat footed and you will have to touch no lower than the top of your first ab. Work on getting your best arch. Depending on your flexibilty you could still get your feet well tucked under. Wider grip will engage the shirt more. I forgot to say, work on triples. They will get you more used to the groove of the shirt and help you work on making each rep the same. Check out the 'southside bench' program.

Thanks again for the advice! Will work on triples after the comp as won't do much more work before the comp, unless I hit some next week or so for ME! So good to have experienced guys like yourself in here for advice. Really helpful when ya don't have people like that to feed off at training!

    Today didn't go so well...

    DE Upper

Pink Band Speed Bench - bar weight only...
    Bar * 5, * 5
    40kg (88lbs) * 3 - 9 sets (varying wide, med an narrow grips)

Had to stop after this as the right shoulder made a very minor 'ping' on one of the early sets. Didnt feel it much at the time but slowly came on. I iced it on an off throughout the day but didn't do any further exercises after the benching on it as no need to risk it. Was going to go through openers tomorrow but moving this to Sunday as rested yesterday as four in a row would have been to much and want at least a day off between DE an the opener testing.

Hopefully shoulder comes right fast. Nothing major wrong but wanted to play it safe an avoid risking it this close to nats! And hopefully it's right by tomorrow. Bench shirt will be good to help it if not anyway!
