The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Its no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

speed was very good tonight and felt really strong under a normal bar again, I think i could of went upto 315 and still maintained the same speed, next week 5x2(increase 10lbish each set) and follow with some heavier doubles thompson style again, no idea what I will hit but id like to be up and around 440-465 range I imagine to be able to have a crack at a new all time PR squat after this 3 week wave

    RE BENCH/Bench assistance

    Close Grip Pauses
    bar x lots/close/medium/wide
    135 x 15
    175 x 5
    225 x 3
    245 x 3
    ---
    265 x 3
    275 x 3
    275 x 3
    285 x 3
    290 x 3
    225 x 17 (comp grip)

    'Z' presses
    90 x 15
    90 x 15
    100 x 10

    V bar pushdowns
    5 sets of 20

    Swiss Bar rows
    3 sets of 20

    Seated DB Power Cleans
    4 sets of 10

the z presses are awesome, really pumped my upper body up like crazy, If I could get upto 135 for reps im pretty sure my whole upper body and especially bench would benefit from them! weights were moving a bit slower tonight as expected from mondays heavier benching, so banged out some reps and tried to stay away from anything heavy, gotta keep that in mind now we move closer to max week again

    ME Lower

    2.5'' Deficit Deadlift
    135 x 10 x 2
    225 x 5
    315 x 5
    355 x 3
    405 x 3
    430 x 3
    450 x 3
    470 x 1
    485 x 1
    500 x 1
    lower deficit to 1.5''
    520 x 1

    500 video:

High Bar Close Stance Pause Squats

    135 x 10
    190 x 10
    245 x 8
    255 x 8

    Lat Pulldowns
    2 sets of 12

    DB Shrugs
    2 sets of 20

    Rear delt flies
    2 sets of 20

    Ab roller
    3 sets of 12

head and hip positioning were a little funky on the video set, upper back still needs work and I think the rounding from the start is more of a positiong thing although nobodies back can be too strong in this sport! When I lowered the deficit it was obviously less apparent!

None the less some nice PR's and deadlift is still moving nicely, which is all that counts when that bar hits the floor come meet time

Nice job on the pull. Seems like you are letting the weight bring you foward a tad, but that does happen when the weights get near the upper limit.

    ME UPPER

Bench Press( pause first rep, touch n go rest)
    bar x wide/close/medium x lots
    135 x 20
    175 x 5
    225 x 5
    265 x 3
    -----
    285 x 3
    285 x 3
    285 x 3
    285 x 3
    300 x 3

    Swiss Bar Incline Presses
    175 x 8
    175 x 8
    175 x 8

    Chest supported barbell rows
    175 x 8 x 3
    135 x max reps, was about 27 I think

    Seated DB power cleans
    2 sets of 20

    Fat Bar JM presses
    3 sets of 20

job done, felt weird as hell returning to benching with comp grip and pausing first reps always throws me off for the second too (bar path wise). I was never in any danger and the weight felt great unracking and the first reps were speedy as hell. Should of done singles lol would of killed it! Next week I will obviously shoot for more with 5 doubles and then week after max. Bench acc thursday will be comp grip too with chains to really try and get the feel back. Its all quickly coming together again for another good max week, just gotta have a good squat day tommorow and friday and im set.

Just incase you are wondering for people reading we are maxing in the gym so we know we are making progress. Although I know it matters what happens on the platform I always overshoot my goals and under-perform so I think this is definitely helping with so long between comps too. Finish this training cycle then 8 leading into next meet so an indicator about half way is looking like a great thing! theres a bit of an insight into my worthless ramblings anybody cares to read after numbers!

thanks coke, I Seem to have really found a way of making the system work for me and my training partners so far, not going to count my chickens before they hatch but set some big PR's last time round and looking like some more this time way lifts are going

Polk, your name looks incredibly familiar, did you used to post on the animal pak forums!? sumo deadlifter back then I believe and you ran 5/3/1 for a while? if so, strange I remember these things ... if not dis-regard all of that haha

in 2/3 weeks time I am looking to max and hit PR's on all 3 lifts, going for a 506/330/575. 8 weeks later at the meet I would like simply another 5-10lbs on those so lets say 517/335/583... thats all according to how my max week pans out though and I have a sneaky feeling I will deadlift more, so I may go for broke and call a 600 on my third attempt. That would be awesome. I hadnt really thought about it untill now properly but now youve mentioned it Id like to put my mind to it. Easy to type on a forum though, another thing to pull these feats off! powerlifting is a funny old sport!

One piece of advice I can give you is don't get TOO caught up in numbers on meet day. It can play against you sometimes. Focus on your total and don't get too caught up with each individual lift if they don't go your way. Last meet I had 1800 in my head the whole time and would've gotten it if I hadn't missed my bench lol. I still had a huge PR total and thats what counts. You never know how your going to feel that day either. I always hit a PR a few weeks away and on my second attempts I chip that PR 5-10lbs and on the third attempts I have fun with it. It's good to have a vague idea of what numbers you want to hit, but it can fuck you mentally if you don't hit them....
    Best Raw Lifts:
    Squat: 650bs without knee wraps
    Bench: 455 in a contest
    Deadlift: 705
    Total 655/455/695 - 1800

haha thats an awesome piece of advice and very relevant especially in my case, and anybody reading can go back and look through my log of past 3-4 meets or so and what you speak off has kicked me in the balls every single time. Im progressing well at the moment and riding the wave though! we shall see is all i can say and hope! thanks chad!

thought it was, i believe it was nice and original just, 'JAY'... FORVM was a good place, where I initially found my way into powerlifting and efs articles recommended from IRBS who now posts on here. There are alot more top level PL'ers here and alot of idea's bouncing around with a whole PL section, I pretty much read or learn something new every day
