The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Its no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Smolov base week 3 day 2.

    Squats

    385 x 7 x 5

    Sumo Deadlifts
    135 x 5
    225 x 2 x 2
    315 x 2 x 2
    405 x 1
    495 x 1 (15lb PR)

Smashed the squats today, always feel really good on a wednesday so far this cycle so will max out next wed I think, light squat session monday, to keep everything ticking over and max the wed. Wanted to get some deads in today too, and Im going to make the switch to sumo anyway so worked up to something near max today, and will test a proper max next week also to work with. Surprised myself massively with a 15lb easy PR. Only 45lbs within my best meet pull, so if I only pull 10lbs more next week, I think by the end of the year if Im lucky and get some good trianing in I can surpass my conventional. Theres a brutish thing about sumo I quite like.

It's the name of the squat routine I'm following, is an eastern bloc method called 'smolov'. Has me squatting 4 times a week in the base cycle. 3 times in the intense mesocycle. I'm only doing base though! Check it out! It's pretty brutal

    SMOLOV RESULTS

I cut it short because I felt awesome wednesday and felt good again tonight, I want to crack on with my other lifts now!

    Squats
    5 mins elliptical
    agile 8

    Bar x lots x 3
    135 x 5 x 2
    225 x 2 x 2
    315 x 1
    405 x 1
    440 x 1
    495 x 3 (Massive rep PR, about 15lbs I think + extra rep)
520 x 1 (5lb lifetime PR, left it there with some in the tank)

Had a nightmare with the video's, phone died on first set, and friend had to film the single, depserately trying to get it off him, got vid of first rep on penultimate set. Got to stop doing funky shit with my elbows at the bottom but you can see I fired it up pretty easy despite that. Was a good set, (pretty funny if you look back at meet result 3-4 weeks ago, about 10lbs more pinned me, absolutely no hope of even 1) and my 520 looked alot better in that respect as I knew I was only keeping tight for a single, need somebody to scream at me keep 'em locked down though. 3 weeks of hell all worth it.

Only thing is I am stumped what to do next, Im switching stances for deadlifts and dont want to be held back by percentages now with my squat when im pretty sure I can smash pretty much every single one of my old rep PR's. Id be confident enough saying I could go in next week and probably squat another 5-10lbs more. SMOLOV WORKS!

Going to have to have a good think about where I go from here.

    I AM A SMOLOV SURVIVOR!

    Plans...

Today I checked my alternative feds calendar as I want to return and it turns out there is a local meet (about 30 mins drive from me) on february 3rd which is ideal time to also qualify for the IPF british classic that year too which after seeing the success of it last year and not being a participant I felt quite left out! Some awesome lifting went on that day and any chance to get your foot in the door for a selection for the euro's/worlds etc is worth it even if its just getting my name out there, You never know all the bigger stronger boys could get injured and I get sent by default ha!

Anyway, its 12 weeks today so it leaves me with 11 training weeks.

I am going to run sheiko for the 1st time after being pretty much inspired by smolov and I think if I take it just as seriously I will make just as good gains, I generally hate training any less than 4 days a week because lets be honest, we all do it because we love it and I feel my best and happiest when im training, but I will make the sacrifice in the name of returns!

Going to go with the generic run of sheiko 29>37>32(usually 12 weeks of training but I am going to modify for 11). 29/37 (8 weeks) are ascending in volume and 32 is a peaking cycle. I am going to not do week 2 of it though however because it is the week with the most total volume/lifts of the monthly plan, so I will simply just do week 1, 'skills evaluation' where I will aim to set 5lb PR's and then move straight into week 3, week 4 which both taper down in total lifts to the final week of the meet, stopping training on the wed.

I am totally alien to this style of training and have a very basic understanding, so it should be interesting to see how it pans out, I just like to put things into detail incase anyone reading can use the info! wether its a risk or not, fails or goes really well its what its all about! Pretty sure I'd still qualify with opening lifts anyway with the junior totals so even if it doesnt work (which im sure wont be the case) I still have plenty of time to get strong again for the nationals/classic.

enough talking. Back to work tommorow. Any questions feel free to ask.

Nice job getting through Smolov. My training partner is running the 4 week prep cycle ( I know it's called something other then that but I can't remember) and I have never seen anyone with his work ethic and he is pretty banged up lol. I am thinking about taking a run at it. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress with sheiko!

Thanks chad, I poured everything into it haha, I upped my cals massively, was drinking shit loads of chocolate milk, I was sleeping every oppurtunity I could, I'd get in from work on rest days, straight to sleep for a hour or two, get up eat and repeat! Its pretty brutal but if you make it through the results speak for themselves! tell him to expect anything from 20-50lbs If hes a bigger boy like yourself! thanks man, Its totally different for me but I'm hoping it will bring me up a class pretty swiftly.

    Sheiko 29# - week 1 day 1

    Warm up
    5 mins elliptical
    agile 8
    some upper body band work

    Bench (reps/sets)
    bar x 20
    135 x 5
    160 x 5
    195 x 4 x 2
    230 x 3 x 2 -paused 1st rep
    245 x 3 x 5 -paused 1st rep

    Squat
    bar x 20 x 2
    135 x 5 x 2
    225 x 5
    265 x 5
    315 x 5
    365 x 5 x 5

    Bench- (feet up)
    160 x 5
    195 x 5
    230 x 4 x 4 -paused 1st rep

Close grip seated cable row (instead of fly's)
    5 x 10 @ (light weight)

    SSB GM's (Save shoulders)
    5 x 5 @ 135

I will point out the subtle changes I make, they wont be massive to the point they will mess with the structural integrity of the whole programme but personally id rather do rows for shoulders health than fly's for pec. The changes I make will be more based on keeping healthy and preventing massive imbalances or putting me in risk of injury. Im sorry Boris but I just do not rate fly's at all for absolutely anything, and 9/10 if you dont believe in something... it doesn't work. I will occasionally throw a rep out set in there aswel for confidences sake or days I'm feeling really good.

Its a strange sensation doing these sort of programmes. Smolov you get to a point where the weight doesn't really trouble you in anyway and you aren't in danger of failing but moving it from A to B does get harder. I imagine this will follow suit very quickly!

I hope so B, going to be long boring lifting and not too interesting of a read but I anticipate a sort of methodical rise in numbers!

one thing I learned from smolov bruiser! How you feel is a lie! if the russians are doing it, you should be too! In all seriousness though I still class myself as beginner/intermediate despite training, competing for a while in my no. terms and there is always new things to learn. I did 5/3/1 for half a year, westside for going on nearly 2 and a half and the way I responded to smolov just cant be ignored. Gotta give these things the old college try!

Sheiko is a patient routine and in theory you can run it yearly. Even if I add 10lbs each to my squat and dead and 5 to my bench, thats 25lbs every 3 months. Thats 100lbs a year being very conservative! I'll take that any day!

    Sheiko 29# wk 1 day 2.

    Deadlift:
    bar x lots
    135 x 5
    225 x 5
    255 x 3
    300 x 3 x 2
    355 x 3 x 2
    375 x 3 x 4

    Incline Bench (Close grip)
    4 sets of 6 @ 135

    Dips
    5x5@ BW

    Block pulls (off two 45's)
    275 x 4
    325 x 4
    375 x 4 x 2
425 x 3 x 4 (two sumo then had to swap to conv.)

    Lunges
    5 sets of 5 @ 15lb chain

    Hanging leg raises
    3 sets of 10

This was not fun at all. I am absolutely terrible at block pulls(which is good in a sadistic way they are in there). One thing I didnt anticipate from smolov too, no deads for 4 weeks... hands are torn to bits now.

Sumo feels good but i'm far from a master technician. Gonna take some time but hopefully with all the sub max volume I will build confidence and good technique. Its frustrating taking a step back and watching training partner pull more weight than me conv. at 198 but I've just got to bite the bullet and remind him who's boss in 11 weeks haha.

Also check out my new hat. Best purchase of my 21 years of existence on this planet.
