Awesome that your branching out and giving Strongman a go. Should be really fun. I thought about too, but I need to figure out time to train for it. My schedule is already pretty tight.

I made the trip upto the new gym today!

This will be kind of a strange log post because I really didnt have a plan going there, just getting there was enough and having a crack at the implements etc.

I walked in and first things I layed my eyes on were the logs, one smaller one and a big ass steel thing that looked horrendous. I asked one of the lads what the weights of them were and got to work after a little warm up.

    Smaller log (110lbs in weight)
    110 x 5
    135 x 5
    155 x 5
    165 x 3
    175 x 1 *shaky and horrible
    175 x 1 * 10x better, got tight and pissed off
    190 x fail/fail

the weights listed in the event say the logs will all be 185 but different sizes so I wanted at least one rep to see where I stand. No go

    Big log
    155 x 5
    155 x 5
    155 x 5

Didnt attempt to load this up, ironically I found it alot easier to handle than the smaller one, even the presses. It sort of forces you backwards so the press seems easier. Didnt work up due to the fail on the other log, Will give it time. The sets of 5 were easy though so I think id have been up around the same with this log as 175ish

    Yoke
frame - one run of 20 metres
    265lb - 20m
    440lbs - 20m
    440lbs - 20m
    440lbs - 20m

Now this really give me a rude awakening, I wasnt too scared at the propsect of a yoke being as I've squatted nearly the same weights so I thought it wouldnt be as bad on your back. WRONG, have to carry it alot higher and it swings like fuck to begin with. 1st run how I even made it is beyond me. 2nd I was a little less shaky but was getting alot better. 3rd run I had got a consistent hand placing and used to the balance so this was a pretty good and smooth run in comparison. I actually went straight and didn't look babmi on ice just with 440lbs on my back.

    Finished with some paused CGBP-
    4x5 @ 225

had to shoot at that point with trains etc. I'll get some pics up off my phone of the setup. Pretty cool gym. Dude who owns it is the president of the GPC. 935 squat I believe in his prime, 700x10. Didnt meet him on this occasion but his sons were there.

I will say I will never try the yoke after squatting ever again. My core hates me, and I need to do a serious amount of manning up over the next 12 weeks if I want to do well, let alone finish the events.

    Humbled.

Strongman stuff looks fun and interesting!

Franco Columbo was only 5'5'' if I remember correctly, but I think strongmen in general were a lot shorter back then, lol.

    'Events'

    Log Press
    bar x 20 x 3
    small log
    110 x 5
    135 x 5
    Big log
    155 x 5
    160 x 5
    160 x 5
    165 x 5
    175 x 5
    175 x 5

    CGBP
    3 sets of 5 @ 235

    Yoke
    all beltless
    frame(135) x 20m
    315 x 20m
    355 x 40m
    385 x 40m
    405 x 40m

    Iron cross hold
    30 secs
    30 secs
    30 secs

    Farmers/keg carry - 1 min rest
    135 each hand - 175lb barrell

Ten meters each way. x 3

Pleased with todays efforts, I failed even 1 rep @ 185 last week on the log so pressing just under it for sets of 5 this week is good. The yoke also I changed up my hand placement and I was literally running with it this week. Doing 40m instead of 20 I will have to do at comp to build up conditioning early on, same as the farmers keg at the end, not doing either in comp but never done any real conditioning in my PL days so best start now! Hopefully these newb gains continue at this pace! I could be actually moving some respectable weights in a few weeks!

    Squat

    Back squat
    bar x 20 x few
roll around on floor and roller pretending to be stretching
    135 x 5 x 2
    225 x 5
    315 x 5
    add belt and WRAPS
    365 x 5
    405 x 10
    475 x 6

    Leg Press
    4 sets of 15 @ 4 plates

    Lunges
4 sets of 8 each leg

    Ab roller
    4 sets of 10

    Tire flip
    3 sets of 10

Squats felt ridiculously good tonight, My first real experience of knee wraps too and I liked them, got no PL comps lined up for a while so may aswel make use of them. Reaped the rewards of sans equipment squatting tonight ie just you and the bar. Depth was literally perfect and I was popping out the bottom like nobody's business. Will go a few more weeks beltless I think before I wrap up again and take 500 for a ride for reps. Owner come in and told me he has sorted a tire out so I immediately ditched back raises and went and did some flips with it. I think once im used to these wraps I could be going from strength to strength with squats and repping with 500+ for fun soon. We'll see. Its easy to sit here and call numbers whilst typing, another thing taking that bar out and nutting up and doing it.

haha, none of them will hurt you bruiser, all about lasting a long time and training consistently in these strength sports, and anything that helps with that im cool with. I bet they would help you a lot with the crazy temperatures where you are!

thanks mac, they were good, something enjoyable and different, the Tyre isn't ridiculously heavy but it will serve its purpose for conditioning work. We did ten flips each, I flipped it down one way, training partner flipped it back. I cant imagine tying a rope to it and pulling it forwards 10 metres, then pulling it facing backwards the same following up with 10 flips will be very nice though or combining it with other carries and drags etc
    Check out my training:
