The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Squat night

Been pretty heavy on the lower body last 3 sessions in 6 days so I was a tad hesitant going into tonight, turns out I didnt need to be.

warmed up with some tire flips

    Squat
    bar x 10 x few
    135 x 10 x few
    225 x 10
    315 x 5
    375 x 2
    425 x 2 (beltless PR, default really)
    add belt and wraps
    450 x 2
    495 x 6

    SSB GM's
    145 x 8
    145 x 8
    145 + chain x 8 x 3

    Ab rollouts
    4 sets of 8 @ BW

not bad, had no spot and my 450 was a tad dodgy as I felt like I was going to pass out. Think it was the late introduction of belt and wraps etc and added pressure + dehydration maybe? Who cares, it happened and I moved on. Good set with the 5 pies, would of been good for 8-9 I think with a trusted spotter and a bit of grunting.

feeling really good, tad run down from last few days but will re fuel, get tomorrows pressing out the way and thank god I have speed deads this week. (Using cube as the base line for my lift rotations).

squats seem to be going from strength to strength, shame strongman is all about picking heavy shit up off the floor!

not for yoke mac, all about moving, I can wear sleeves but they dont really do shit compared to wraps. I've thought about wearing knee wraps for yoke but I think it would be easier to hyper-extend my knee's and that would spell disaster with a frame trapped on your back.

    Vids from saturday event work

Here's some vids from saturdays event work.

I tried to upload this once but something went wrong with the links, you can enjoy my messed up version of a push press with the log, struggling with balance. Presses are pretty easy.

Yoke run is the 575 first attempt I believe hence the speed and expression of dying on my face.

    Thursday deadlift

    'Speed deadlifts'

    Deadlift (beltless)

    135 x 5 x few
    225 x 5 x few
    315 x 3 x 2
    ----
    add 3.5'' deficit
    315 x 3
    315 x 3
    315 x 3
    315 x 3
    315 x 3
    315 x 3 + 25 chain
    315 x 3 + 50 chain
    315 x 3 + 75 chain

    Front Squats
    135 x 5
    175 x 5
    225 x 3
    265 x 3
    315 x 1
    325 x 3 (PR)

    Decline abs
    4 sets of 10

I hate front squats more than any other exercise, hence me forcing myself to do them and the range of things they carry over to in strongman is not even funny so its a case of nutting up and doing it. Form nazi's I am aware I have funky knee's. Cut me some slack, its hard to god damn breathe and cant really look down at any point!

Major props on those front squats...I suppose it builds character to take on something so challenging, lol.

    Event training

Didnt get a massive amount done today but did get some quality work in and had a blast as usual

    Log press
-worked upto top set of 3 @ 215

    Yoke
    - 4 sets @ 315 x 20m
    - 1 set @ 500 x 20m

felt awful so shut it down there.

    Stones (over yoke)
    - loaded the 185 a bunch of times pretty easy
    - loaded the 245 3 times after a first miss (hit the yoke)

next stone up is a 310 so I've got some work to do yet before I attempt that bad boy. Will start obviously working with the lighter stones for time and repetitions.

As I said, not a great deal, but the stones are fun. You won't find a cooler way of lifting heavy shit ever. If I hit a 225 log next week, that will be massive, as I was struggling with the thing itself 5 weeks ago.

    Squat monday

    warm up
    tire flips

    Squat
    bar x lots x 3
    135 x 5 x 2
    225 x 5
    315 x 5
    405 x 1
    add belt and wraps
    485 x 1
    510 x 5 (Big PR)

    Paused front squats (2 count)
    175 x 3
    175 x 3
    175 x 3
    175 x 3
    175 x 3

    CS dumbell rows
    3 sets of 15

    Band pull aparts
    3 sets of 25

    Bicep insurance
cross body curls - 3 sets of 15

forgot abs as I hung around to spot a buddy on his bench training as pretty much everyone else in the gym would have killed him or ripped the bar off in fear at any sign of stalling. Good spotters are truly invaluable, as I quickly learned as tonight escalated very quickly, we had 5 of us and a god atmosphere, one lad squatting 145 and me up around 505-510. Just goes to show effort goes a long way and nobody is too good to train with someone. If he wants to learn or has a go and puts everything into it I'm more than happy to share a rack with him! I was supposed to be doing 60% 8x3 squats but as we had a decent group I worked up and it payed off. If I can hit 530ish for 5 in the coming weeks I'll be over the moon and well on my way to a 6 wheel squat (575)!!! I want to squat 600lbs this year no doubt, knee wraps or no knee wraps.

    Upper work

    Strict Overheads
    bar x 10 x 3
    95 x 10 x 2
    135 x 5 x 2
    ----
    175 x 10
    175 x 9
    175 x 6
    175 x 3 drop to 135 x 6

ran out of gas in the old triceps

Close Grip Floor Press (brief pause and thumbs from smooth)
    135 x 5
    135 + 45 chain x 5
    175 + 45 chain x 5
    200 + 45 chain x 5
    225 + 45 chain x 3
    235 + 45 chain x 3
    245 + 45 chain x 3
    255 + 45 chain x 3

    DB incline
    50's x 15
    50's x 15
    50's x 15

-Band pushdowns - 3 sets of failure
    -scapular retractions - 3 sets of 25
-reverse pec dec - 3 sets of 20
    -shrugs - 3 sets of 50

good session. Overheads are still improving nicely, will shoot for 10 again next week with 185 and then see what I can get after, few sets of 6-8 would be nice. Will do another ME bench movement after to try and keep my bench up there. Close grip is feeling stronger than comp grip now and lockouts feel real strong. Want a 225 log saturday and eventually strict 225 on a bar. Motivation is high.
