I'll be going up tomorrow to watch some of the qualifiers and then again on Wednesday and Thursday for the finals.
Newcomer Hafthor Julius Bjornsson could be a suprise. He measured in at 6'10" and 438lbs!
Thor and Shaw set the fastest times loading stones that I saw. But I only saw three groups go. Both guys were absolutely amazing. Spent some time talking with Poundstone at lunch. I don't know of any other sport where the top athletes are so approachable and willing to share of their time.
I've been able to hang out with Derek and Donnie Thompson. Damn but that is cool stuff! What other sports can you do that?

Definitely some big guys out there throwing some HEAVY weight around. Really pulling for Poundstone or Shaw.

Anyone know what will happen with the events if there is inclement weather tomorrow?
brian shaw wins!
God damn, with dudes like Shaw and Thor is seems Poundstone, and may of the other strongamn just doesn't have to genetics to be WSM, and Poundstone if a genetic freak.
I believe Shaw won. Won it in the final event.
1. Brian Shaw
2. Zydrunas Savickas
3. Terry Hollands
4. Laurence Shahlaei
5. Derek Poundstone
6. Thor Bjornsson
7. Vytautas Lalas
8. Mike Jenkins
9. Stefan Solvi-Petursson
10. Ervin Katona
Shaw and Big Z were both on 40 points coming into the Atlas stones, which Shaw won to take th
I had a chance to watch some of the prelims over the weekend and speak with a few of the competitors. There were some outstanding performances and it should make for great TV when it airs in December.
Here is a picture that I got with Big Z after he qualified for the finals on Sunday. All of the athletes were very accessible to the crowd, which was cool.
I'm pretty disappointed I didn't make it to the WSM this year, but how great is it that Brian won??? The only thing better than an American winning is an American winning it in American. Way to go Brian!!!

Back Squat 435lbs
Shoulder Press 195lbs
Bench Press 315lb
I really wanted poundstone to win.
Year after year he always gets like 2nd or 3rd place.
Would have been nice to see him get 1st.
Best lifts: 245kg deadlift, 162kg Front Squat, 145kg bench, 105kg log press, 250kg yoke carry, 115kg farmers, No. 2.5 Captains of crush
That is where Shaw's height really helped him. His huge wingspan made it easy to hold those stones where Z's huge belly and shorter arms kind of get in the way.
Congrats to MHP'S Brian Shaw and MHP's Savickas! Both are gentle giants. Shaw has to be one of the nicest down to earth guys you will ever meet. Also nice to see a brother in blue Derrick Poundstone placing in the top 5!
