    Getting started in Strongman

Hey everybody, I just competed in a local strongman competition at our rec center today (and won). The thing is, it was at my rec center and I have been getting encouragement from friends to go forward with strongman.

My question is... where do I start? How do I go about training for strongman or even should I be picking up gear?

    My current stats:
    A: 22
    H: 5'7"
    W: 197

    Today's Events .
    Tire throw: 32'10"
    Tire flip: 49.22 secs
    Farmers Carry (100/arm): 9.27 seconds
Truck Pull (70s Dodge Ram): 24.34 seconds

I feel like these were scratch events and want to do more. Thing is I have no idea where to begin.

Me after the event...thanks to thecityalive for video taping and taking this photo!

    Any tips would be great!

We have had many bar discussions about this, Dan. I'm telling you, you can do it.

find a crew in your area (I know Michigan definitely has strongman crews) and meet up with them and start training events. It is that easy

Do this! Even if you can only travel to train with a group who's experienced once a month or so. My only sanctioned strongman meet was in 2006. I traveled 2 weekends to train and learn technique from the meet promoters team in east Georgia. That's the only reason I did well at the Georgia's strongest man event. When you get into some of the actual events you'll have in the sanctioned events you'll find that technique is as crucial as the brute strength. For example, few men have the brute strength to flip the 720 - 900+ lb. tires in the bigger events without mastering the technique. Same with the Atlas Stones and others. It'll be worth a little traveling. Winning the local event should show you you have the potential to do well. Just be sure and 'learn the skills. Good luck!

If you are looking to enter another contest then I would look up a NAS sanctioned event - http://www.nastrongman.com/

There are some experienced competitors who live near you and if you are interested in training with some implements I can get you in touch with them. The easiest way would be if you are on Facebook and can send me a friend request/message, and then I can introduce you to them through there.

Agreed! The event I did was a NAS meet. Very well run and judged. If you're serious, NAS is a great place to compete.
