why does the Farmer's walk assist your grip so well?
could you not get the same effect without the use of your legs ?
Therefore it would be more of a static hold with dumbells.

    My grip sucks BTW.

However, here is a tips that I have read about and agree with.

Try training your pinky finger specifically.
Ever notice how in a static hold of DBs the grip will peel away from the outside to the inside ?

I agree with you completely Latman, you have to do what helps give you the biggest lift, but would it not be better to balance, that's all I'm asking.

I'm also amazed how there is such a big difference in what you can lift using these two grips.

What would you advise for someone to do when they are starting out doing deadlifts??

As far as grip goes I would suggest they start overhand. Once the weight is too heavy use a mixed grip. If you are comfortable switching it up from left over one set and right over the next, then go ahead. I am just so accustomed to the grip I use it is just the way I set up when going down.

Do you have other deadlift questions or was that just reffering to grip?

Also, if possible get some chalk. That goes for all training too. I love chalk.

Well I've just started doing deadlifts for the first time Latman. I do them with a slight bend in my knees and push out all the way until my back is straight.

I've heard people saying that you should keep your heels stuck to the floor, does this make the lift more effective??

Must say, I love this lift, get a real buzz doing it and it seems to work a lot of my body.

Dig your heels into the floor. That is good advice. Sounds like you are off to a good start. Make sure you are focusing on pulling the bar back at all times and not letting the bar drift forward.

Shocker- when you first start out you should be going light anyway, so no need for mixed grip. Once the overhand is starting to give out I suggest switching. I usually warmup overhand until I get to the 315 warmup.

Well I've been trying to keep the bar as close as possible to me and not for it to swing out from my body.

I'll stick with the overhand grip until I an't go anymore and then look at swapping.

    Cheers for the advice.

    No problem.

One suggestion that people often make, but I have learned is improper form is to start with the bar touching your shins. If you do this, when you bend down to grab the bar and start pulling up, you will actually have to bring the bar forward to go past your knees. I start with the bar a few inches in front of me and pull back. Just something to think about.
