I've always tried to concentrate on keeping my elbows in with this exercise, as that is what I was instructed. Is elbow placement of paramount importance?

i think keeping them in keeps mroe stress on the triceps yes.
as they flare out i feel momentun starts taking the bar up and down more.

i definetely feel it more from being strict and eeping my elbows in

Skulls are one of the most "cheated on" excercises out there. I see guys flaring out their elbows on skulls all the time. It's VERY easy to cheat. So watch that.

And, if you're feeling really ambitious one day, try them with a reverse grip. That makes them cheat-proof. But start light with this; it takes some getting used to.

Thanks guys, that's kind of what I thought. My tricepts are naturally very strong, and it seems the more weight I add to my skull crushers, the more pressure it is putting on my elbows. I think it is my body trying to tell me something, and I think it is time for Mark V to find another tricept exercise.
