I found out the bar I used to bench with a couple days ago did have the rings narrower by an inch and a half or so, so 415x2 with a closer grip was better than I thought considering that.

04/30/2014 Squat at North Port Barbell

    Squat
    barxsome
    166x5
    231x3
    276x3
    363x2
    430x1
    Add belt/loose wraps
    506x1
    No belt/paused
    276x8

Car Push (start uphill then flat)
3 times x about 80-100 feet with larger size car

Squat was good today. First time I have done over 500 in a long time. It was easy, but all I wanted to do was a single right at 500 or just over. My knee felt good throughout also, which is also the first time with anything over 435 that it has felt fine, so I'm happy with that. I did the car push later on a few times to simulate something close to the truck pull event. I need to try to be faster, as none of the vehicles are ever hard but I'm not very fast.

    Clean and Press:

    Axle
    barxsome
    80x5 cleans and 5 presses
    130x3 cleans and 1 press
    150x2 cleans and 1 press
170x3 cleans and 2 presses (missed only 1 clean out of 4)

Much better today. I was consistently getting the contest weight all but one time which just got a little too far in front of me.

    Log
    110x3 cleans and 3 presses
200x1 clean and 1 press (missed 1 clean first)
    180x3 cleans and 3 presses

This was a bigger diameter log and weighed 110 empty. The cleans felt harder than the other log I tried before, but it was still ok with over the contest weight, so it won't be a problem.

    Low Row/Shrug Combo on Machine
    135x10x3sets paused reps

    Pullups Neutral Grip
    BWx6x2sets

Car Push (incline start then flat)
    Larger size carx80-100ft.x 3 times

I did this later on in the same parking lot as before. This was better times than last time.

That's all today. I will bench on Wednesday and try loading some odd objects on Saturday.

05/07/2014 Bench at North Port Barbell

Bench Press (trying wider grip-one more finger out)
    barxsome
    156x8
    221x5
    265x3
    331x3
    386x3
    add carpet/paused
    408x2
    419x2 regular grip

    DB Flyes (pauses at top/bottom)
25s+black monster mini band around backx15,10,10

    Triceps Pushdowns
    Black monster mini band doubledx20x3sets

Bench was ok today. I would have much rather preferred a couple more days off after clean and pressing the objects on Monday, but just how it works out this week. I tried going heavier today one finger wider on each side of the bar. Lighter weight actually felt a bit better, but heavier weight felt a bit harder. I thought for sure I was going to get 4 with 386 after how easy the first 2 were, but touched in bad groove on the 3rd rep. The 419 set, which was the only one I used my normal grip felt easier than either that or the 408 with the wider grip, even though I was out of groove on one of those reps also. Overall, I think I'm going to have to use the slightly wider grip more, especially if I go up in bodyweight at all, because it is feeling narrow to me with my usual grip I have been using, but it will take some time to adjust before it feels the same as strong there. In a few weeks, I think I will use my regular grip for the heaviest sets and then do a few sets each bench day with moderate weight with the wider grip, as well as warmups. Next week will be a week off for bench because of the strongman contest.

    Loading to 52" platform:
sandbags, keg, large wood block, large circus db

Just a bunch of reps with each of these different objects. The last two objects I just cleaned them high enough to load it, as other people were pressing with them in another area.

That's all today. I might squat light on Monday. If not then that's it before the contest next weekend.

    05/17/2014 Strongman Contest in Melbourne

Fire Truck Pull- Finished in around 50 seconds, 3rd.

Odd Object Clean/Press Medley- I did the log and circus db easy, and messed up on cleaning both the axle and keg and ran out of time, 3rd.

Duck Walk- I hated this, and was too awkward to be fast enough. I walked about 10 steps with it and put it down and walked away, just so it was far enough for 1 point, 3rd.

Odd Object Load- I finished in about 50 seconds. Could have been faster if I knew how to do the last object ahead of time. I was the only one to finish all 5 in under 60 seconds though, 1st.

Squat- I just took one attempt with 470 after the other 2 competitors finished their attempts. Really easy, of course, and my knee felt good too even after the whole day and not wearing wraps or sleeves, so I was happy about that, 1st.

So I got 3rd overall, but won two events. The points were closest it could be 11-10-9. If I would have cleaned the axle, I could have won the contest, but that's ok. I will try another one again, but definitely will choose based on events I like or am good at, or at least find interesting to try.

    111x8
    156x8
    221x8
    265x8
    309x8
    353x7 PR

3-board paused (used one finger wider grip on each side)
    309x8
    342x8
    375x4 tired

DB Flyes w/black mini band behind back (long pauses at top/bottom)
    20s+bandx12x3sets

    Triceps Pushdowns close-grip fat handle
    50x20x5sets

First time I've done higher reps in a long time on flat bench. It went good today.

05/24/2014 Deadlift/Back at the Dungeon Gym

    Deadlift with Frame
    empty framex5
    230x3
    330x3
    410x3
    510x1 belt
    590x1

    Row/Shrug Combo Machine
    135x10x3sets paused

    Lat Pulldowns (neutral grip wide/medium/narrow)
    150x5/5/5
    160x5/5/5
    170x5/5/5

I wanted to try deadlift with this frame because it looked interesting, and I remember one a long time ago I tried at a gym once that I really liked. This one was ok. The handles are very wide apart, almost like a snatch grip deadlift but neutral grip. The 590 was actually hard to grip. I finished the lift, but that's probably the first time I felt like I couldn't hold the bar for awhile on any kind of deadlift. Of course it was a smooth handle with no knurling though. The balance was also difficult to get right. I would like to come back here and try their trap bar another time, because that looks like it would be better, and is very nice for a trap bar with room for enough plates.

I'm thinking of benching in a meet in October. Going for 460lbs. raw. I have not found a meet yet that I want to do full power. It will have to be with monolift and wraps allowed at least the next time I do one. The reason is to be less risk of knee injury or being aggravated with heavy weight in the squat. I will be working on getting my squat up to 700lbs. raw regardless, and see when I'm ready to do that in a meet.

    06/01/2014 Squat at Stronglife Tampa

    Squat
    barxsome
    145x5
    235x3
    235+75chainx3
    285+130chainx2
    325+130chainx1
    375+130chainx1 belt
    415+130chainx1
    470+130chainx1 belt/loose wraps

    Knee Extensions
    Purple bandx20x3sets each leg

Walked with a sled with a couple plates about 300 feet 3 times

Squat went pretty good today. Definitely the heaviest I've gone so far in over a year and a half. It didn't feel hard at all, and finally this weight feels pretty normal again, not unusually heavy. My knee felt fine other than it hurt some on the last set near the top. It feels ok now though. So I guess it's good till about 550-600 for awhile. I probably won't go above that for another month at least.

    PecDec Machine
    50x10
    130x10
    190x10
    250x10
    290x10

    Triceps Pushdowns (light)
    75x15x4sets

I was just planning to do shoulders. But I decided to bench also, since I did very little benching last Friday, and felt good to bench again sooner. I wanted 3 with 345 but I could tell 2 was it today. Reps have felt better the last few weeks. 315x5 might be a rep pr though, or at least ties it. It was probably the easiest 315 has felt for reps on incline. I did touch with all the reps on 315 also this time, even though it is difficult to, but still do not touch any lighter than that. I haven't done dbs on shoulder press in forever either, probably at least a year and a half. It was ok, but not great. Felt heavy after inclines. Did a lot of sets on other assistance work.

    06/10/2014 Deadlift at Stronglife Tampa

    Deadlift w/Reverse Green Bands
    225x5
    315x5
    405x3
    495x3
    585x1
    Add belt
    675xmiss at knees
    Green bands+small mini bands
    675x1 but lockout was iffy
    Green bands
    495x5 no belt

The bands were kind of high on this power rack then what I usually use where the bands help no more than 45lbs at lockout. It was probably around 60-70lbs. assistance at the top and 100-110lbs. at the bottom with the green bands, and not more than another 10lbs or so with the smallest mini bands on there. 135 stayed on the floor. 585 with no belt felt pretty easy today, and 675 on this was ok with the small bands added. Would like to have a better lockout next time I use that weight though.

    Seated Deadlift
    135xsome
    185x5
    235x3
    285x3

I was just trying this out a few sets. What it is is where you start the deadlift seated on a box or bench and pull from there like normal. I think it will be a good assistance movement. I need to use a lower seat height next time then what I tried though I think.

Because most of them are only open certain times or just when the group is training, and some don't have some of the equipment like monolift, good bench, etc. Others have a few good things, but nothing to do assistance and stuff. I like to train squat or bench with other people around that can spot/handoff/use the monolift if possible.

I used to just train at the north Tampa Powerhouse for awhile, but now Andrew, Tony, and Bill took all of their equipment from there and moved it to a warehouse place they call StrongLife gym that is connected with a crossfit gym. They used to have enough decent stuff at one place before that happened. But that's where I would train around here to use a good monolift and bars. I like training there, but it is really dependent on who is training or will be there that night, because only a few people there I trust to spot or handoff to me. Most of the people are newbies and really have no idea how to do either of those things and/or are not strong enough to pick up the weight if something happens. I have been doing other assistance stuff at the other Powerhouse gym downtown recently, because they have more variety of things to use that I like, mostly machines for assistance stuff, plus they have decent incline and decline bench and heavy dbs.

Also, sometimes my usual training partner Dru works (coaches other lifters), at the Dungeon in North Port or The Cave in Sarasota, so I have trained those places with him a few times when it has been on one of the days he works.

I mostly prefer training with Chad Walker and his crew in North Port in his garage (North Port Barbell) when possible. All of them are strong and several are around the same strength as me, especially on bench. But the times they train don't always work out and that I have been training more randomly than the same things on the same days each week, like how I usually bench every 9-10 days most weeks instead of 7, but not many other people will do that. So I only go there when it falls on the same day and at a time that works for me.

Anyways, I have only been training 2 days per week usually, 3 sometimes, recently, so it's not that big of deal to go a few different places.

Benching went ok. I really wanted to get the last single 353 with the chains. I believe 342 is a pr with 80 chain (which would have been about 424 at the top, and about 400 at the bottom, so basically an average off-season day), because I needed just tap to finish 353 with 80 chain before, but had jumped from 331 with the chains the set before and hadn't done anything in between that ever. So I would have been happy with a cleaner rep with 353 and chains, but not today. That will definitely be the goal next time I use them. Would like to do 375 with 80 chain sometime before the next meet though.

06/21/2014 Legs/Light Squat at Downtown Tampa Powerhouse

    Leg Press
    318x15
    518x10
    718x10
    918x10

Stopped there, knee didn't feel great on last set and pulled something on my side when unracking. (I think I was turned a little to one side when unlatching the handle.)

Squat with SSB walked out (no belt)
    barxfew
    152x5
    242x5
    332x5

I hate this bar with regular squats but all they have there that I can fit in to use.

    Leg Curls (paused reps)
    50x10x2sets
    70x10

    Leg Extensions
    50x20x3sets

    Calf Raises (paused reps)
    105x15
    210x10x2sets

Today was ok, mostly assistance. I wanted to squat heavier, but nowhere I could train with a decent bar/monolift in the afternoon. Have to be next time.

I think switching gyms up keeps it fresh. I have one main home gym, but switch it between 2 more every couple of weeks. Keeps it fresh.

It's ok. I definitely prefer to have all the equipment I like all in one place nearby and good people to train with. Real life just doesn't always work out that way. I do like visiting different gyms and see how other strong people train though. I would like to do more of that sometime when work and money is no longer an issue.

06/24/2014 Heavy Back/Light Biceps at Stronglife Gym

    Barbell Rows
    135xsome
    185x5
    225x5
    275x5
    315x5
    365x5
    415x4 cheated a little

    Lat Pulldowns (wide grip)
4sets of 8 progressively heavier each set

Weights weren't marked, last set was probably around 260, just because it started to pull me off the seat with that weight just holding it, so it has to be near bodyweight. First set was probably 160ish.

Face Pulls w/Medium blue band (between purple and green of old color bands)
4sets of 10 paused each rep

    DB Concentration Curls (light)
    30sx10
    40sx10
    50sx10
    20sx20

Good assistance day. First time I did barbell rows in a long time. Wasn't my best but decent.

06/27/2014 Bench at Downtown Tampa Powerhouse

    Floor Press w/Fat Bar
    barxsome
    140x8
    230x5
    280x3
    320x3
    370x2
    410x1 PR

I weighed the bar after and it was somewhere between 50-53lbs. The scale wasn't super accurate with it, so I just counted it as 50lbs. being the low end.

    Flat DB Bench
    140sx6x2sets
    110sx18

    Bench Machine
    100x10
    205x10
    250x8
    305(stack)x5

    PecDec (paused reps)
    150x10
    230x10
    305(stack)x8x2sets
    Drop Set: 190x6/105x10

Benching went well. Definitely the heaviest I have done on a floor press ever. I believe my best previous was either 390 or 400 for a single, and I know 380 for a double. The bar kept feeling like it was trying to spin in my hands though. I really didn't like that bar very much. I had to be real slow with it, even for me (which I bring the bar down slow as it is anyone that has seen me bench). Dbs weren't that good after. I was gripping the bar with 2 fingers pretty much the whole time, probably just because of gripping that bar benching first and the db handles are pretty thick here too compared to the regular metal ones that you usually see heavy dbs. The last two machines here are some of my favorites. That is one thing I really like about this place is they have some good machines that are useful and most adjust really well, as a lot I have a hard time fitting in.

And also this was at 10pm, and there were actually a few strong people training at this time too. I only say this because I hate mornings and training late at night is great.
