The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Its no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

I would bench only one day per week and cut back on accessory work for the last 3-4 weeks before the next max attempt or meet you do. I think your max will be higher then. Your recent training suggests that you should be stronger, but I think the extra volume affects recovery too much when you're peaking for a big attempt.

I'll give that a shot. I did cut out the second bench day. But I also brought back my close grip board presses so I can hit my triceps hard. I'm also doing more shoulder work. So we'll see how this plays out.

    A better day...

    Tuesday
    07.17.12
    SQ/DL

    Squats w/Texas SQ bar
    Barx10
    145/2x5
    255/2x5
    345x3
    435x1
    Added belt
    525x1
    Added knee sleeves
    615x1
    675x1...10lb PR
    685x0

    Deadlifts w/Texas DL bar
    245x3
    335x3
    425x1
    515x1
    Added belt
    585x1
    655x1
    715x1...5lb PR
    725x0

Done...I think I got a little greedy on the squat. The 675 was pretty hard and for some stupid reason I said 'F' it, i'll go up 10lbs and see how it goes. Well, it didn't go far, lol. I got out of the hole about 2-3 inches and dumped it off my back. That's the first squat I missed in about 5 years. I think I missed the 725 deadlift due to some form issues not because of strength. My shoulders were rounded and the weight was pulling hard on my pecs and lats. So I decided to let it go and stop fighting. The shitty thing is, I stopped with the bar passed my knees. I believe this would of gone if I started the pull better. Oh well, I think this cycle went pretty good even though I might of peaked a little early. I tried something new with my deadlift by pulling heavy every other week and I think it went pretty good. I'll probably pull a little more often as i'm getting closer to the meet.

I did take some video and i'll post it up tomorrow, i'm pretty tired right now and I need to get some rest before I go to work. So check back tomorrow evening!!!

You still hit two PRs which is great. The fact you want to hit even more is what'll drive you to keep getting better.

Brian - the title of this thread is "My journey to 1800..." By my calculations you've hit that number with 15 lbs to spare. Granted, you still need to hit that in a competition - but think about it, with gym lifts you've exceeded your goal by 15 lbs. It is time to change the title of your thread. Congrats Brian - you've moved some serious tonnage and have reaped the rewards.

And if you hit all your attempts in competition, you're talking about exceeding 1,800 by 50 to 60 lbs!!!!!

Nice prs on both lifts. I think you can get that 725 deadlift. I know what you mean about a lot of strain on pecs or lats though. I've had that happen once in a great while. Definitely a better idea to put it down in training than risk getting injured.

Thanks April!!! I think I can get it also. I was just in a bad position and didn't want to chance getting injured. My goal for the meet will be 730-735 depending on how my training goes.

I know you can't judge depth from the front, but that was deep. I bet you can get the 725 next time if you don't do 715 first.
