About 2 months ago i added dips to my chest routine..they were hard at first but after a while They got easy and I added weight..now I can do 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps with a 35 hanging from the belt...my chest and tricep strength had increased alot since i added these.. I NEVER and mean NEVER see anyone but this one chic do dips in my gym...thats sad...heck whenever she sees me now we do dips together..why is this valuable exercise blown off so much..its hard but doesnt take long to learn......

Dips are a fundamental "upper body" activity. Such a great movement! I've seen my largest improvements after replacing bench presses with these. Bonus: They don't hurt my shoulders as much.
You answered the question right there ... they're hard. Most people don't do them for the same reason that most people don't squat or deadlift ...they're hard. Some are clueless, laugh at them and keep dipping.Originally posted by Wolfgar73

You don't really need to. Although you can change the emphasis of the dip with your body and arm position, the movements are similar enough to only do once IMO.
Its not done often because ppl dislike failiure. If your gym doesnt have an assisted machine, and you cant even squeek out one rep - hell, I would avoid that machine too!
Most people walk over to the dip station try once and never go back. Just more of a challenge for my personality.
I never have to wait for the dip station, or the weight belt at my gym.
As hard as they are, you can really add weight quickly. I can now do full ROM dips with 75 lbs added now. I haven't worked out a year yet. 3" dips look as stupid as the 3" squat.
They are like 10 times harder if you try and do them before bench press. They don't really have a good warmup by themselves. The assisted dips feel totally different to me (assisted pullups as well), but bench presses warmup everything you need.
i LOVE dips.. i do them at the end of my shoulder/tricep work out just to completely kill my triceps.. i found something i like. Instead of starting your dip work out at the TOP of the motion. Hang down.. and then start from your "lowest rest position"

I hate dips, but i felt like such a pansy when i read this that i tried them again today, and i still hate them. i had my feet on a stool the whole time and it was all i could do to get 3 sets of 8. i'm going to just keep cheating like that until i can actually do them, then maybe one day before i die i can add weight. i'm not such a girly-man on anything else, i just hate those bastards.
hey look i deadlift, squat, pull ups, bench etc i can miss one big movment off?
personally always prefered bench to it.

I hate dips, I think the exercise is great but they hurt my shoulders, I am not very flexible..
I love dips, a movement that you can go to true failure on and the way you know it is when your arms give out and they can't even hold you up, your face come extremely close to kiss the bar. That is an exercise.

Ahh, I just did my first set of dips in a whole year! (Just got my dip bars ready to go). First set was BW*15, second was only 12. No swinging!
Not too bad considering how much muscle I've lost.
I think my point is; Dips can be more of a "learned" excersiz e. Once you have em, you have em! Like chinups were for me as well...once the motion is learned, I didn't lose all that much.
i love dips. They are a central movement to my routine.
If they are pain free, do em (except body, we'll forgive ya ...lol)
Love dips...... it's a real buzz in the gym loading up the belt and having these guys looking at you, they might laugh, but they can't do it.
I think dips are a great exercise.
I hate the dip station at my gym. I has a pad and handles, so its always clogged by women doing weightless, pointless leg raises.
I do mine with 45s. Feels...GOOD!

Dips rule. My stupid gym doesn't have a weight belt so I have to tuck a DB between my legs and find it a little awkward but otherwise I love em.
