    My Raw Meet Results and #1 Total / APF NGBB Classic

    I had my second PR and American Record breaking meet in back to back weekends today (3-3-12)! Last week I had my best equipped squat performance ever and today I had my best raw (without kneewraps) meet ever. I was in the 55-59 308 raw division at the APF NGBB Classic in Kennesaw, Ga. weighing in at 288 lbs. in what will probably be my last meet as a 308. Here are my results:

    Squat:

    Opener - 501 good - American 55-59 record.

    2nd - 600 miss - cut it high.

    3rd - 600 good - PLWatch current ranted #2 M2(>50) #6 M1(>40)

    Bench:

    Opener - 374 Good - American record.

    2nd - 402 Good - Tied meet PR raw bench <15 months after shoulder replacement.

    3rd - 418 miss - A little too much to finish.

    Deadlift:

    Opener - 551 Good - American record.

    2nd - 600 Good - #1 M2(>50) #13 M1(>40) - Tied raw meet PR.

    3rd - 633 Miss - Got about 1/2 way up.

    Total: - 1603 - #1 M2(>50) #6 M1(>40)

    Felt no trace of the back injury from last week's meet. The rest week worked. I feel like I had an excellent meet considering competing single ply last weekend! Very happy with my comeback so far!

    Our two 14 Y.O. lifters had very good meets. Christian Blackmon (13-15 132 div.) squatted 297 - benched 181 - deadlifted 297 to total 775+ single ply.

    Josh Thrasher (13-15 165 div. raw) squatted 225 - benched 135 - deadlifted 325 to total 685+ (All established American records). Our next meet will be May 26-27th APF Masters, Junior, Teen Nationals in Baton Rouge, La. I'll compete multi-ply there.

    Outstanding performances, big guy. Congratulations on the PRs, records, and successful comeback!

    (Glad you were able to recover from your single ply meet so quickly. My stabilizer muscles are still inflamed from my final deadlift at a meet eight days ago. Growing old sucks!)

    Thanks UncleAl! I'm very happy how well I held up for the meet. But I am very ready for a week or so of just not worrying about training, what I eat, supplements or anything else but being.....normal.....at least til I get bored with it in 6 or 7 days! LOL!

Also heard several say they thought the deadlift that beat you should have been turned down for thigh support. I didn't see any footage, but there's some buzz about it going on. Either way congrats on a great performance on the big stage!

    Powerlifting Watch has videos of the deadlifts that decided Scott's contest. "Epic battle" is an understatement! Both you and Scott did us proud.

    Just wondering, as I really don't know, but why would you wear a suit to squat 297 and deadlift 297? I thought suits were meant for like heavy, heavy weight...or are they for any weight?

    lol are you serious? It's 650 pounds buddy. If that's not heavy then I don't know what is.

    ...Did you notice the part where it was a 14 year old kid under 132 pounds who was doing this? 2.5 times bodyweight warrants the use of gear, especially at that age.

    ^Yeah, I noticed his size, I just thought gear was for like very, very heavy weight (like 700+). But like I said, I really just don't know, because I've never used gear before, and probably never will have the chance to.

    Christian is an awesome young lifter, as is Josh. Christian is very strong for his age and weight. Especially for his lack of leverage at this point. He's almost 6' and 131.5 lbs. The suit he wears is a fairly loose sperior suit. Titan's entry level suit. He wanted to start learning the gear so we started him in this. He gets very little from it. We're upping him to a super centurion for Teen Nationals. I think as fast as he learns he will squat maybe 400ish by then. I see him being a 6'3"ish 275er by his early 20s. Josh is made to deadlift. He ground up his 325 with the tenacity of a bulldog. He's grown through 3 weight classes in under 2 years. He'll be huge soon. His dad is one of our SHWs and is 6'3" and 320ish. His Mom is over 6'1".

    ^Oh okay, I see now. Also, STRONG genetics! My mom and dad are both only 5'8", so I'm basically stuck at 6'0" :/

    As far as powerlifting goes being shorter is a blessing. You fill out your frame much faster and your leverages are thus much better. I'm almost 5'10" if I stretch good and at this meet weighed in at 288. I have shorter upper arms and thighs and it makes for a better bencher and squatter. A bit of a handicap for deads but I still manage to have a pretty decent DL to close a meet. So, being 5'8" could be a good thing in this sport. At <5'10" I still have good leverage even down at 242s. Just make the most out of the hand your parents dealt you! Good luck!

    ^Yeah, that's true, but in addition, I still play football at a lower division college and I box, so height would greatly help me in those :/

    LOL! I understand the feeling! We're kindred spirits! I played football at Jacksonville State which was Div.II way back then. Then boxed and fought P.K.A. full contact Karate. I was always fighting tall guys at <5'10" 230 lbs. I was already into bodybuilding and powerlifting by the time I was fighting (way too many irons in the fire, but enjoyed it all!). Always wished I was taller for football and fighting, but my height was a big advantage for both bodybuilding and powerlifting...especially powerlifting. So, I guess the Good Lord knew what I'd do long term afterall! LOL! Like the Garth Brooks song says "Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayer"!
