i think cutting refers to reducing body fat, while retaining lean muscle mass.

Cutting generally means "cutting calories." When cutting there is no need to change your weight lifting routine...just your eating habits. Some people will add in additional cardio on non training days but it's more of a personal decision rather than a rule.

I could be way off here, as I don't know what cutting is technically either. But my guess is that a cutting diet would have a low enough caloric intake so 2-3 pounds of fat could be lost a month. protein/carb/fat ratios would shift to higher protein, workouts would include more sets of 10-15 as opposed to 6-10 and there would be more cardio involved in the program.

Where a bulking diet would be higher in calories and the protein/carb/fats ratios would shift away from the proteins a bit

If you don't have a super low bodyfat % then you shouldn't have too much trouble losing fat, and perhaps gaining muscle.

Everyone agrees eating a low GI diet ('cept PW) is helpful.
    Always lift heavy.

I am in the low fat camp. Fat requires no conversion to be stored in your body. Your body will do this readily. Carbs require a 23% "tax" to be turned into a fat. Unless your body thinks you are over eating it will not take this loss, especially if you are in calorie deficit.

If you are super low on carbs your body will convert protein to make glucose. As far as I can see this a.) robs from you muscle building supply, and/or b.) breaks down muscle to make glucose.

I pretty much avoid fat altogether and take CLA and EFA's on my low GI meals. Working great so far.

You can expect to lose one lb of FAT every week to week and a half.

I'm sure you did and can lose 6lbs, but that's maybe 2 lbs of fat, and the rest is glycogen and water loss. Assuming you didn't lose any muscle. Big assumption.
