    Question For Deadlift Specialists

    Need help laying out my plan for a push/pull meet in eight weeks. How much squatting, if any, do you guys recommend for assistance and at what intensity? I pull conventionally and depend on my back more than my legs, if that enters into the equasion.

    Low close stance box squats do well for most deadlifters. After you pull do a few sets of 5-8. Sit way back to get the hams and glutes firing. Take this time to hit your abs heavy and often. At least 2 times a week for 12-15 sets per workout.

    Thanks, Scott. Do these guys prefer the cambered safety bar? I was told it has superior carryover to the deadlift.

    I agree, if you have a SSB, I would use that over a straight bar. I also agree with the low box close stance squats. You might wanna try doing some front squats as well. And I need to take Scotts advice on the ab work, lol.

    Thanks, guys. Tried a few narrow stance safety bar squats to a very low box this morning. Awesome!

    I work abs every workout, but never that many sets! Then again, I also do weighted carries three times a week which
    hit the entire core pretty good.

    I wasn't going to post as I'm anything BUT a deadlift specialist.....

    But I am lucky to have been able to train with some monster deadlifters and what I've taken away from that is the importance of front squatting and close stance ( toes straight) leg press.... Adding those two plus a lot of band training has taken my deadlift from the mid 6's to the mid 7s in a year. Granted, I had a real quad weakness that these helped correct ( hence the big gain)... but it might help you too.....

    Lones, Barzeen, and Brian - Thanks for your suggestions. Already cycle in GM variations and leg presses. Can't do front squats, unfortunately, but it appears I can get the same benefits from the cambered SSB.

    I really SUCK at front squats too due to a busted up shoulder. ( Can't hold the bar with anything heavier than 135 without it feeling like my arm getting pulled from it's socket) so I used my SSB for front squats. Just put the handles on your shoulders backwards. The bar will lock onto your neck. Plus the padding on the neck makes it kind of nice.

    Question For Deadlift Specialists

    Thats not really an unusual gap. Despite some in this thread, it is quite possible to legitimately squat more than you deadlift. I have squatted 570 in knee sleeves, my best pull is 505 on a DL bar. Ive done that for a set of 5 on squat.
