The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

It’s no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Cheers JLS, yeah confidence is coming along. Just have to nail the squats this afternoon an will be in a very good place 3 weeks out.

Yeah Tom there are plans but they will be a while in the future. Spent my most of allowance for a while haha

Yeah that's exactly right Brian. And I would rather lift more in training an end up nailing it on comp that the other way around.

W8D4 Final Run into the O's

Coan Phillipi %'s on Squats Day - Fri 16th Nov
    - @ Massey Gym

    Squat

    60kg * 5
    100kg * 3
    140kg * 3
    180kg * 2 - 2 sets
    200kg * 1 - add B+WW
    215kg (473lbs) * 1 @8 - felt strong an good depth (see vid)
    Work Set
    227.5kg (500lbs) * 2 @10 (see vid)
    'Speed' Sets
    167.5kg (368lbs) * 3 - 3 sets all @9, no belt
    Walk Outs Only
    260kg (572lbs) - 10s hold after set up
270kg (594lbs) - 10s hold after set up, felt very heavy.

    Note / Thoughts:
    - Was excited an focused for the double at 227.5kg all day. Warmups felt a tad tough but once above 200kg the mind got switched on and the work got done.

    - Very pleased as depth was better than last week an the 215kg just flew up. Amazing how much difference really switching on an getting a bit aggressive can make. Got to keep this mindset going right through to the Oceania's. In a good headspace.

Looking strong as ever Hayden. Impressive squattin'. Doubling 500lbs is unreal dude.
This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy - George Bernard Shaw

Awesome squatting, man. You're short-changing yourself with the kilos to pounds conversion too, 227.5 is closer to 502 :-)

Thanks Rock, pretty close on the depth, I would say parallel, could probably do with a half an inch more to ensure I nail it.

haha fair call there, I just always think of 227.5 as 500, but your right it is slightly more!

Yeah my thoughts too Rock! Singles should be better to ensure depth. Will find out this week!

W9D1 Final Run into the O's

Coan Phillipi Deads - Mon 19th Nov

    Deads

    60kg * 5
    100kg * 3
    150kg * 2 - 2 sets
    200kg * 1 add B
    230kg (506lbs) * 1 @8
    250kg (550lbs) * 1 @9.5
    Work Set
    267.5kg (588lbs) * 0 @11 (aka. fail) - 2 sets
    250kg (550lbs) * 1 @10 - dropped weight to get a little extra work in, tough rep.
    'Speed' Sets
    190kg (418lbs) * 3 - 2 sets all @8, with belt

    Power Shrugs
    160kg * 5 - 2 sets, kept these same as last week.

    SLDL
    150kg * 5 - 2 sets

WG Pull Ups - not scheduled, just bonus
    BW * 8 - 2 sets

    Note / Thoughts:
    - Bit frustrating. Sorted the weights (borrowed a 45cm diameter one) so as to get rid of the deficit today but missed the scheduled work set anyway. Really wanted it but strength was just not there today. Will probably just do my opener an second next week in Deads, likely to be 250kg then 260/265kg.

    - Less accessory today so hopefully the body starts to recover a bit. Feeling pretty fatigued lately. Will upload vids later.

    - 18 days to go...

After this meet, really hit your lockout and strengthen up your glutes. Your speed off the floor was fast, but once you got to your knees is when the fight began.

Haha cheers Tom, they've started growing abit again with the extra calories lately!

Yeah that's the plan Brian! Need to sort that out, always been my weakness so need to fix that in the next lot of training.

W9D2 Final Run into the O's

Heavy Bench Day - Tue 20th Nov

    Bench Press

    Bar * 6
    60kg * 3 - 2 sets
    100kg * 2
    115kg * 2 - add WW
    Work Sets
    130kg (286lbs) * 1 @9 - touch an go
    135kg (297lbs) * 1 @10 - brief pause, butt lifted
    130kg (286lbs) * 1 - 2 sets @9.5, all calls
120kg (264lbs) * 3 @9.5 - left it here as elbow was flaring a bit so no point pushing it.

    Barbell Bicep Curls
    20kg * 12 - 3 sets

    WG Pull Ups
    BW * 8 - 2 sets

    Note / Thoughts:
    - Happy with the day. Pretty quick 130kg touch an go, then a paused 135kg so got to be happy with that.

    - A bit annoying that the butt lifted but sorted that a bit when I went back to 130kg. Focused on pushing knees outwards hard an trying to get feet further back towards head. Got to stretch those quads a bit between sets. That helped.

    - Looking to open at 132.5kg which is probably a good number as the actual weight used works out to be just over 2kg higher than face value (weight I listed). Want to hit 137.5kg or 140kg at O's. Feeling confident.

    - Had a bit of a short easy walk after training an plenty of foam rolling etc. Good to get the recovery work in.

    Nice benching, man.

Sorted the weights (borrowed a 45cm diameter one)
Have you had to get used to anything else training at home? Different height bench, different thickness of bar etc?

Thanks Joseph & Coke - want to grow those thighs a bit soon Coke!

Yeah Tom, the bench is aparantly a bit low when I measured it but that's no biggie. May sort that to raise it at some stage. Bar is slightly fatter but I have two as my training partner Jono brought one round too which is the right diameter.

Yup I bench in my squat shoes JLS, feels easier to get heels down an feet flat.

W9D3 Final Run into the O's

Squat + Bench Singles - Thu 22nd Nov

    Squats

    60kg *5, * 3
    100kg * 2
    150kg * 2, * 1
    200kg * 1 - 2 sets, B + WW
    220kg (484lbs) * 1 @9
    235kg (517lbs) * 1 @10 (tad high, video screwed up)
235kg (517lbs) * fail - bit wobbly descent, got out of the hole ok but couldn't get hips through
227.5kg (501lbs) * 1 @10 - tough rep but happy to get it after the previous sets fail as felt pretty drained. Depth was good though. Vid on angle so no luck with the squat vids today...

    Bench Press
    60kg * 3
    100kg * 2 - WW
    120kg (264lbs) * 1 @8 - all calls
    132.5kg (291lbs) * 1 @9.5 - all calls (got this vid, see below)

    Video

    Note / Thoughts:
    - Pulled the squats a day forward this week in order to have more rest before Deadlifts next week. May have affected the efforts but I wanted to do the squats followed by bench opener to simulate competition style + get extra rest.

    - Will have three days off now. Maybe excluding perhaps some pull ups tomorrow.

nice work H, bench looked alot better, good call on the extra rest too

only reason I ask about the shoes is because I've tried benching in my Heeled shoes and they are slippy as hell, I know that sounds contradictory to their whole purpose but there you go! If they work better stick with them!

Fair enough JLS! Mine don't slip so they work well a

    Thanks Rock an Brian.

Did a little bit of work today. About 6 sets of Pull Ups with body weight, 3 sets were wide grip an 3 sets neutral. Then did 3 sets of Pendlay Rows and Barbell Curls followed by some band resisted weighted crunches an regular crunches.

Bit of an accessory session to work the back, rehab the elbow and get a little core in. Will head to Wellington to watch the bbro meet an help a couple of local lads out tomorrow. Should be a great meet.

Busy weeked ahead but should get to catch up on journals on Sunday!
