The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Its no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

PR day today, meet write up

I was not feeling great about doing the APF Holly Jolly Power Bash today...
I'd been smashed with the flu all week. Down 20 lbs from my normal weight and mostly unable to eat all week.

I had trouble setting up on the monolift at the meet ( my fault entirely, I need more practice with different monos) and all of my warm-ups felt shaky and forward.

I opened squat at 920 because I knew the judges from past experiences and knew that they would be tight.... buried the lift, way too deep and it was slow coming up.

I was spent by this point and just wanted to get the 1003 squat I'd been working on for two years ( hitting it in the gym but never in a meet) so I jumped the 80 lbs and cranked my suit. My stance was WAY too wide but I hit depth and came up, stalling slightly on the way up as I shifted my hips.... 2 whites and I had finally gotten my 1000# squat.

Passed on my 3rd and warmed up for bench. Between not being able to push my bench because of a nerve injury and losing a few inches of gut from the backloading diet I know bench would be rough.

I hit my 666 opener ( good call from Rudy of Overkill to keep the opener low and safe, using bar speed to touch easily) but my 2nd at 711 was out of the groove, I cramped and gassed out half way up and the spotters grabbed it, smashing my hand in the process. I decided to bail on a 3rd and take the shameful bench to give me time to ice my hand and save my back for a PR pull.

We didn't have a deadlift bar at the meet, so there was not much grip and the bar was stiff as a board. No flex at all.
680 opener was easy as it should be so I jumped to 738 to get me a 5lb PR total and beat a teammates best total by a half pound. I got amped up and tried to use some speed off the floor to carry me through the lift, but with no bar whip that wasn't happening ( HUGE respect to the IPF guys who always pull with a bar like this) the lift was a grinder but I nailed it for an 11lb deadlift PR and a PR total.

Other notable lifts ( and I'm sure I missed a few) came from Jeff Johnson of XXX powerlifting hitting a big 733 bench and the monster Rob Luyando smashing a HUGE 959 bench. Brendan Leudke of MGG also came through with his first 1000 squat in a meet. And my favorite lift of the day, my wife Kristin smashing a 187 and 214# bench at 130# in a crazy tight 2-ply Overkill, making all of us having trouble touching look bad.

Huge thanks to Overkill Strength Equipment for getting me the best gear, and to Rudy for handling me at this meet. Thanks to Team Overkill for their help as well as the Mecca team, and team Stone for helping with my bench.

Thanks guys. I'm not sure why they didn't use a real deadlift bar. It gives you a whole lot more respect for the big IPF deadlifts though. Way harder to pull without the whip and grip of a deadlift bar..... but hey, even without a good bar Corey Micelli broke the 308 deadlift record ( for Illinois) with a 788 pull..... so I got no excuse.

On a positive note, I need to start training with a bar like that. It can only help make me stronger. Anyone ever try that?

I always used a stiff York Bar in the gym then only used the Dl bar at meets. My meet Dl was always 40-50 over my test numbers with a the regular bar.
