The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Rest day headaches

Does anyone get headaches or body pains of any kind from being out of the gym for too long, either with rest days or when you schedule breaks for 2 weeks/a month? I just had my 2 weeks off (1 week sick) but at the gym today a gym friend said he couldn't be out of the gym for very long because he gets aches and pains and that he never schedules breaks because of this. I'm not good at arguing points even when I have the facts but is there any truth to what he's saying about their being pains on break? What would be the easy science to schedule breaks (Longer than just 1 or 2 days)?

I had over a week off over Christmas/New Year and started to get aching in my Hamstrings which slowly got worse from day to day. It stopped when I started training again. I wonder if it has something to do with Atrophy? Then again when I went back in I'd gained strength so can't see me having lost any muscle.

If you have body aches and pains training can definitely help. Training pushes more blood and other bodily fluids into the areas being moved and can actually help"lube" stiff joints etc. So what your friend experiences can be a very real thing.

You regularly take 2 weeks/month off from the gym? Can I ask why?

I schedule a 1 or 2 week break off every 3 to 6 months apart. I believe I read about have scheduled breaks in order for the body to have a real time to rest, not just a day or 2 every week. Diet stays the same unless I happen to travel somewhere on vacation. Went to Thailand last year and enjoyed the beaches, swimming, snorkeling and all sorts of fun.

I see. So what if you didn't have a vacation planned for that time? Do you still just stay away from the gym? Also, do you lift really heavy?

Up until now I've always planned something around those 2 weeks. I'd probably plan something for that time, even if it's something closer to home. I was doing a 5x5 fullbody routine, lifting heavy. Now I'm doing MI40 which is less about weight and more about time under tension.
