Small guys who get big and still feel small?

I was what I would call a "late bloomer" I still grew an inch when I was 20 and before I started working out I wasn't one of those big bulky guys trying to slim up. Now I'm 5' 10" and 207 (I've been up to 220) and have always been lean. People comment on my size and training intensity in the gym and I am happy with my build but I still don't feel like a "big guy". Anyone else ever feel that way?

Personally, I think that it stems from being a smaller guy in school. I've never had a self-confidence problem since finishing puberty (you know that stupid age) so I don't think it's that. Just that my self image of myself when I am walking down the street doesn't match my actual image.

I don't think that he was necessary say how he sees his self and how people see him(personality wise) When you look at yourself you may feel small or smaller then what you would expect sombody to be at your size, because ones expectation are always larger then their relization. That called "unsatisfied" or searching for perfection.

I do that too. Going from 148-184 I still feel small, even though people around me think that I am big.

Well I am not saying it's a problem. I don't want to be massive like "the freak". Just wondering how many people are kinda surprised when people are like "you're huge man" because you were smaller in your early teens and you just don't think of yourself as big.

What I really think it comes down to is that you expect to feel different when you are bigger but then you find out you are the same person. Kind of like getting older. When I was 20ish I would think ahead to the age I am now and think how things would be different. Now that I am there I'm the same person I always was. I was just curious how many people out there feel the same. It could work the opposite way as well. Someone who's heavy and slims down might always think of themselves as fat. Look at these poor people with eating disorders. Obviously their self image is not their real image becasue they look sick.

    I won't see myself as big until I'm 240+

Hell, I'm intimidated by fat women which are bigger than me

Yep I hear ya, and I think it's to do with the fact that most guys are around the 6ft mark today so even if they are skinnier than us shorter guys they still are bigger to the untrained eye. The key is to know your place when it comes to size and just be happy, just because you work out 12 days a week doesnt mean there arent gonna be 10 guys bigger than you at a party and 30 guys bigger than you at a club and 100 guys bigger than you on the street. Just being comfortable with yourself is more important and remember not to piss of the guys who are bigger....and stuff

To become better, more understanding human beings, we must realize that our perception is not reality, and make a constant attempt to bring our perceptions more inline with reality. Yes, everything we know is obtained through perception. This requires us to compare our perceptions with those individuals we consider to have insight into reality.

A logical conclusion based on your viewpoint is that Karen Carpenter was right about being too fat.

Well, in her mind, she was too fat. Correct?

The rest of the world thought not.

But IN HER MIND, which is the ONLY perception of the world (remember that no matter how much you try to empathize, etc etc, your ONLY view comes from within your mind), she was too fat. Hence, she was too fat.

If we could all "leave" our heads for a minute, granted, we'd be able to see ourselves quite clearly. But you can't leave your head. And it doesn't matter how far you try to step away from yourself, you simply cannot leave your own viewpoint. You can be objective, whatever. But it all comes back to you looking out of your eyes and processing with your brain. You are what you are. Who knows exactly what that is? There's not a skewed perspective in this world. Even the most isolated and enlightened Buddhist sittin' in a temple lookin' at a monkey knows that he can't escape himself. He may try, but he can't quite do it.

I'm not really "Big"...but from lifiting I've gone from around 5'9" 140 skinny lbs to 175 & looking pretty ripped with ~11%BF, so I have a good athletic build, not a BB's build...
At work my boss was a jock, into lots of sports one day he said "Man, I got to get to the gym & get in shape like you, you got the guns!"...I was shocked!...Also I was @ a party & a girl I hadn't seen in a few years came up and squeezed my arm & poked my chest & went on about how ripped I was...felt nice!!

Yes, even the most focussed Buddhist will always see life through his or her own eyes, with his or her limitted perspective. Yet the struggle to touch, and to better understand reality makes us better as people. While it is impossible to completely understand and view reality, it does not mean that we can not better understand reality.

If it was impossible to better understand reality, then introspect and study would be pointless. Hell, complacency would be the way to go. Why look both ways before crossing the street? We won't understand reality in better if we do.

If a better understanding of reality was impossible, we would not be able to put a man on the moon. No, we would only understand reality equally as well as we did at the beginning of mankind, and scientific progress would be impossible.

I'm not saying the goal of an external POV is not a noble one, just one that can never TRULY be reached. Like perfection. But striving for perfection, nothing wrong with that.

    I agree 100%.

This post is finally getting some good responses. Gympunk, those things have happened to me a lot too. I've always been like "really?". And if you're like me it's not a lack of self confidence or anything, just that you don't feel THAT big or anything. I'll admit I'm pretty happy with my build and as soon as I get the chance I'll post a pic. It's just that after all these years of lifting I still feel like me.... does that make sense to anyone?
