DB Shrugs VS. BB Shrugs: Which Do You Prefer And Why.. ?

I am wondering about shrugs. What kind of shrugs do you guys prefer and why? BB or DB?

DB you kind of have more of a free movement without being restrained to a bar but youre generally forced to go much lighter.

With BB youre restricted to a bar but you can go much heavier.

Which do you prefer and why?

Wow really? Never tried them. They seem pretty similar to DB shrugs though with your palms facing your body.

    yeah sorta.

palms face together, but you get the beneifti of the stabilitiy of a bb.

i like it because it allows me to shrug straight up and down without my shoulders rotated either to the front or the back as with a bb.

DBs for the reason Tryska mentioned ... no rotation of shoulders, you can keep them straight and (for males) you don't scrape your nuts with the bar.

The only reason I do shrugs with a barbell instead of DBs is that there aren't heavy enough DBs in my gym for my shrugging needs.

I really like the 'shrug cage' thingie that someone here posted once... that's a great idea.

This is also key... not painfully scraping your sac is a prime consideration in many male activities.

I use a closer grip so the bar is lower on my thighs and although this problem still exists proper bar placement can help eliminate this.

Anyway I really like shoulder-width grip BB shrugs, nice and slow.

Is that what that is used for? I have one at my gym, no body knows what its for. The bar just sits there, with dust build up.

I'll have to give it a try next time i'm at the gym.

Yeah a guy at my old gym used to do them 5 plates on each side. I personally have never seen bigger traps in my life.

They're also used for trapbar deadlifts. Takes some of the strain off your lower back if you have back trouble.

So Tryska, you like the trap bar, eh?

I use BB shrugs, simply because there are not heavy enough dbs in my gym to use.

I once used the BB and it was really unpleasent down there, so I decided to use DB. 100lbs DB defenitly are good enough for me.

Trap-bar shrugs are kinda cool. However, lately I've become quite a fan of smith-bar shrugs (I know, I know, the smith machine sucks). However, it somewhat alleviate the issue with the male genitalia.

Anyone tried the trap exercise that chris mason posted a long time ago. It was in the Smith-machine but behind the back I believe and a momentum type exercise.
