The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

That is really cool, but I have a greater respect for guys like Glen Cabot who bench raw. I have no idea what Ryan could do without the aid of a shirt, and as shirts help some more than others, I have no valid basis for comparison.

I have to go with chris on this one. How can you stand up and say that you really benched this weight by yourself if you wear a shirt which aids you in your lifts?? More respect for the common man that bench raw.

Anthony clark did not bench raw, he used bench shirts, and used a reverse grip which is widely illegal in most federations.

Jamie hendeson has the raw record at 711lbs.

geneticaly you could put on all the equipment you want and you would never be able to hold 800lbs.

Congrats to Ryan. From everyone I have talked to who has ever met him, he is very down to earth and a good guy. He trains very hard and deseved to get the weight first.

Anyone who says anything about the equipment, I'd like to see you in the strongest equipment ever invented handle 800 lbs. In his training before this meet he was regularly locking out 800lbs in preparation for the lift. HE wasn't wearing a shirt for those.

Shirt pfffff.....my shirt says everlast it doesnt add anything to my bench, you can either bench 800 lbs or you can't, the shirt just wrapped tightly around his chest making him feel secure as he bench pressed you and your whole family.

    Props to Ryan Kenelly.

My point, misconstrued as usual, was that he cannot bench the weight raw, pure and simple. What he can bench raw none of us know. Unless we are morons and think the shirts do not aid the lifts, then we must assume he can lift something less than 800 lbs. Again, how much less, who knows? That was my point. To me, I want to know how much a guy lifts raw for the simple reason that shirts can aid some lifters more than others, thus fogging up a valid comparison (in my mind) between 2 athletes. Obviously it was a great lift, and he has benched more than anyone else with a shirt. Obviously he is extremely strong.

There are special "shirts" that many powerlifters use to enhance their lifts. These shirts are made of various materials. The shirts are such that they make it impossible for a lifter (in general) to lower a barbell to his chest without a considerable load on the bar. These shirts vary in their aid to the lift depending on thickness etc. The different organized powerlifting bodies have varying regulations as to what sort of shirts they will allow.

As an example of what they can do for your lift, I read a bio on a female powerlifter recently where she stated that her bench shirt added 100 lbs to her bench. Quite a difference, eh?

I used a bench shirt when I powerlifted, as well as a squat suit and other legal powerlifting aides. Most meets allow this equipment, so most records you see are with the equipment. The less weight you are able to press, the more the equipment helps. When you get that heavy, the shirt helps very little. Regardless of the weight pressed, the elasticity of the shirt stays the same. My shirt added about 25 lbs to my bench.

I think he is incredibly strong and that is something that I may never in life do, but amazing as it is, its still with an aid. Don't get me wrong I'm still like "DAMN" and the props and due respect are given, but its still aided.

Just like wraps for Deads. Why aren't they used why are they illegal??

I really never new powerlifters used aids until coming to this site. I always thought it was raw. It changes your views...just alittle.
