    Possible Careers?

I am in no rush to pick out a career for the rest of my life but I will be heading into university in less than a month but I have no idea what I want to do.

I think if I set myself, I can achieve anything. I want a career that will make a signifcant contribution to our existance yet be able to make enough money to live very, very comfortably. Anyone have any suggestions of what possible careers there are that would suite the criteria listed above?

Just do what I did. Go a year, then stop. Go back 9 months later for another 18 months, then quit for two more years.

When you finally decide to go back after realizing you nearly ruined your life, you'll have found something you want to do.

I hope you were joking Goin_Big because there is no way that this world needs anymore Computer Techs! The market is so oversaturated with them. Besides its not a stable job industry.

Eric, I goodluck on your search for a career. I am 25 and I still don't have a clue what it is I want to do for the rest of my life. I'm siding with Teaching right now but shoot who knows that can change in anytime. Just make sure you do what makes you happy. Try and make a list of things that you love doing. Then see if you can make money at doing them

I just decided to break down and go into the Ninja field. There's money there if you get on with the right agency and get good at it.

I have visions of DL locked in a room with nice cozy straight jacket tied seculry around muttering about crowbars, pirates and ninjas. Maybe they'll paint the jacket balck for you and give some taby boots so you cant do harm to yourself and others with your toenails.

I've been thinking about heading towards the Corporate world and becoming some sort of a high end corporate worker and working towards becoming a CEO type guy. The only thing is though, all I would be doing is making money and it wouldn't contribute to society. Some thing that interest me as well are finding some cure for a major disease, or unlocking a scientific part of our existance. However, I don't know if i'm smart enough to do those two because I'm smart, but by no means a genius like Einstein.

IT is a good filed, you'll enjoy it. I've enjoyed it the last 9 years. Even ran a pretty good size IT Development and Support department until recently.

Now I'm doing technical support. Good thing I kept up on the technical aspects of the job. I would still be looking if all I could do is management!

The money is excellent too. After you put in a few entry level years and learn a few things, one can make pretty good money.

Not true we need good people high up in the corparate infrastructure. These people make decisions with lasting and huge effects upon society.

Do me a favor and pay attention to your Ethics class when you are getting your MBA.

Oh yeah, and when you make CEO, hire me on as your CIO!

    So am I.

I just wish I had finished off my Bachelors along time ago. I have another year before that is complete. Kinda sucks when I have industry equiv. of a bachelors, but I still have to take all of the classes and get the degree before I can move on the masters program. OF course, the Navy helped me get my foot in the door with my career.

I'll have ~3 semesters left, maybe less if I can bust ass this summer. I agree it does suck.

I should be out on the street right now clobbering evil-doers (without worrying about being arrested).

Eric, there will never, EVER be a shortage of zombies. Its actually tied to the Ninja profession.

    Ninjas kill people.
    Dead people turn into Zombies.
    Budiak kills zombies.

    And we all get rich.

If not you can be PA for life for me. You can practice by getting me some coffee.

Try to get a degree that also provides a skill.

I was going to do business (marketing or finance) but realized most people end up getting stuck without a job because the competition is so great due to how broad of a degree business is (Unless it's accounting or IT).

So, I went out and started a major in Geography with concentrations in economic geography and Geographic INformation Systems, plus a second major in Economics. Geo Info Systems is a computer program that ties into spatial anlysis/marketing for businesses as well as environmental issues, so there's my way into business with a skill. IN fact, I'm currently doing an internship with a Fortune 500 company with their GIS department and will be able to work part time for a good hourly wage during the school year, and out of school there should be a high demand for the skill. Econ provides a roundabout business background and opens the doors to banking (finance), especially when coupled with Geo INfo Systems.

You have to be smart when it comes to picking a major and unfortunatly that requires you to have an idea what you want to go into. Not a specific career, but your interests or long term goals.

    It's tough to do!

If you decide to go the science route...particularly biosciences, get an MD instead. You can do research and get paid more to do it if you have an MD. You also finish faster. Granted, you have to pay back a shload in loans which you don't in grad. school, but you also make enough money to pay it back . If I had to do it all over again I would have gone to med school. If it's the kind of thing you like, then go for it. Try different things out and do lock yourself into anything. Most importantly, have fun.

My MBA courses didn't include an ethics course.

    no wonder. :-)
