The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Time to jump off of something high.

I'll save my elaborated version of the story for my journal, but I figured that this was a good topic.

I walked into the kitchen at work and a lady says "Look, there's one who's not beefy." I was like, "huh?" She explained that her and a coworker were discussing the differences in race when it comes to size and how Americans are generally bigger. Then she said "You're not all muscly, you're tiny."

DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE.

Did you ever work very very hard at something and then have someone totally discredit you? I mean, I'm not a big guy by any means and I've not been back to working out very long but that just totally ruined my day. Makes me want to start bulking again, but I'm going to be rational about it. I should've said, "Yeah, most americans are bigger and fatter, like you. I guess I have self-control."

She was probably just meaning in comparison to her and her friend. When their combined weight is 4x as much as yours then you might be tiny, but in that case it could be a good thing.

Most in shape, lean guys will look "small" in a shirt. For example, if you're 5'10", 170-180 pounds, and lean, you will look relatively normal in a t-shirt or long-sleeved shirt (unless it's really tight). However, if you're a FAT 170-180, you'll probably have a puffier face, fatter arms, and a bit of a gut that overall gives the impression that you're a larger lad. To look "big" in a t-shirt... Well, put it this way. My stats are down below. And I don't look huge in a XL t-shirt. Big, yes. Very big in a tank top. But not in day to day clothes.

So, through her ignorance, she's paid you a huge compliment. Congratulations, you're not fat like the average american.

I know that there is a certain narcissism and/or exhibitionism inherent in the desire to build one's body

    BUT

Just always keep it top-of-mind that you're doing the work in the gym for YOU and not for EVERYONE ELSE and you'll be just fine. If the approval of others isn't important to you, you will never feel 'totally discredited'.

Simple to say, hard to do. But there ya go.

I hear ya, to look at yourself and feel like you've accomplished something is great. I think what sucked the most is this morning before I got in the shower I looked in the mirror and noticed that my cut was really taking shape and I felt like I had lost a nice bit of fat. Without a shirt I was finally getting shapely again. Today was the first day I've felt that way in a long long time. Just bad timing I guess.

I'll keep it in mind though. I know my goals are for me. It still sucks.

And Galileo, don't be discouraged - like B said, if you look good naked - that's what matters.

This is so true. I am pretty lean at 5'10" and ~185 and look unfortunately small in t-shirts that "fit" me.

I hate when that happens. Last week, some girl asked me how I was so small. Wtf, maybe if she asked before my bulk it wouldn't have mattered, but I went from 135 lbs to 173 lbs at 6 foot in about 7 months. I couldn't believe she thought I was little, compared to how I looked before. And I wear small shirts, dammit!

The only solution to this is: Wear tight shirts and flex incessently in front of her.
...watch me reap of what I sow....
