I have been reading a bit about loading on sodium before a contest and then cutting it out. I am curious as to what the point of this is?? why add more sodium to your diet and then the last week cut out the sodium what benefits are there from this?? Why not just avoid sodium as much as possible, so u don't have to worry about cutting it out???:

i may be way off...but also i think it has something to do with whole sodium/water retention link......my presumtpion...that you eat a diet high in sodium and you'll add lots of water to your body...cut the sodium out and drink lots of h2o and it's easier to shed all the water you are holding?

    i have no idea...

oh and i believe the standard fda requirement is 1000mg. but i could be pulling tha out of my a$$ so don't take my word for it.

Sodium loading / Depleting is a very tricky business. IF YOU GET IT WRONG. Potassium and Sodium are Electorlytes (spelling ??) and are responsable for regulating the bodies water. Potassium aids in holding water in the muscle whilst sodium holds water under the skin. Too much sodium will make a bodybuilder look smooth and watery ....... whilst too little will also have the same effect as the body can go in SHOCK !!! and start storeing water. Not drinking water will not help. In fact the oppersite is true. drinking plenty of water will help to flush out any excess sodium.

The reason bodybuilders load before a show then deplete is the belive that the body will excrete at the same rate for the depleting days. Causing minimal water to be visable under the skin.
