    Working on it

Well I've decided to take the plunge and just go for it. I'm gonna try this journal thing and see if it works better than the disasters I've had with "personal trainers". My first trainer was an ex pro football player that felt everyone should be able to handle his workout. There was no beginner....intermidiate or advanced. You simply did his routine. He used to like to yell alot and tell you, you weren't working hard enough. Well if you knew me then you would know I have a "bit" of a temper and as stubborn as hell.
I simply wouldn't give up or let go no matter what my muscles were screaming at me. So after 3 sessions and ripped muscles in both biceps I decided maybe this wasn't the trainer for me. My next trainer was a girl. Ok this was gonna work out.....so I thought. The girl was a former fitness competitor (so I was told).
This girl was also loaded with alot of personal problems and I spent most of my time being her personal counsellor during my sessions. Finally one day she just didn't show up to work and I heard she got a job as a telemarketer. Good luck on that one Krista! My final trainer at the beginning seemed normal. Although everything seemed to be 3 sets of 12 to 15 reps on everything.
It never changed. I finally clued in why this guy always seemed a little too happy at times. He liked to do weed before work. Now if you want to do weed thats your business but i'd like someone with some quick reflexes when he's spotting me. After that I gave up on trainers. Ok they showed me how to use the equipment and if I need a spotter someone is always nice enough to oblige.
I've gotten some good info on one bb chatline which I will not mention but also some fetish crap I am not into. Powerman suggested this site so here I am. Now I am making changes and so far I am very happy with the quality of wbb. So lets begin with the basics. I am 5ft 7 and 125 lbs. Ok its not alot of weight but I was 118 at comp level and I'm happy I am up to this weight. I would like to maybe get on another 10 lbs. This is the current routine from "weedman" and its just an average. Some days are better than others. The third set was always the heavy one. I am planning on cutting back on the reps and go heavier. I alternate upper with lower workouts and manage to get to the gym about 4 times a week on an average, sometimes more. I also teach and coach skating so I am on ice 2 nights a week with stroking and on ice training.
    chest press 80 lbs
    pec deck 60 lbs
    tricep extension 80 lbs
    lat pulldown 90 lbs
    seated row 55 lbs
    bicep curl 15lbs
    shoulder press 40 lbs
    shoulder lateral 27.5lbs

    leg press 500lbs
leg extension 40 lbs (crappy right knee, surgery in sept.)
    hamstring curl 40lbs
    abductor 95 lbs
    adductor 95 lbs
    seated calf 300lbs

    abcrunch 90lbs
    torso rotation 70lbs
    low back extension 180lbs

mix in some treadmill work at the end of workouts

So here it is and we'll see how it goes. Thanks to all of you for your support.

    congrats on starting a journal!

sounds like you have a pretty good grip on what you're doing and where you want to go with lifting, which is a huge advantage

... and that leg press/calf press weight is damned impressive. Must be all that figure skating muscle. I betcha you have better calves than Powerman, too.

Good luck with the journal. Like Callahan said those are some impressive lifts. Keep up the hard work and you'll reach your goals.

About time you put it up babe....I told ya nobody would laugh at you. You've got very good lifts.

And don't worry everybody.....I'm planning on teaching her the almighty Deadlift next month when I'm up there, along with a few other things I know about lifting.

I've recently developed this problem with my left elbow. I really notice it with lat pulldowns. A pain top of forearm at elbow area.
I tried adjusting the grip and it helped a bit but still hurts like hell
with the pulldown. Saw the doctor who thought it was probably a tendonitis. Now my doc is a good guy and a real sweetheart but he doesn't get this weightlifting workout thing for girls. I asked what could be done and he just said don't do it. My dilemma is this. Do I rest it?.....cut back on the weight and reps....put up with it?....any other suggestions?

At what point does it hurt? At the top of the movement, or when your arm is flexed?

What kind of grip do you use? Is it with your palms facing away from you or towards you? And how did you adjust it to help out?

    Oh, and

Liz is this wide grip or close grip? I find a lot of the wide grip bars cause me a lot of discomfort as well. I normally don't like doing wide grip for this reason. Maybe if you move towards a medium grip, or just go right to close grip it may help.

Also, I wouldn't advise going to a GP doc for weight training problems. Their default answer is always to "just stop." If it continues to bother you I'd say you need to go to a physiotherapist. Some are free and covered by OHIP and others are only partly subsidized. I'm sure you know this as a skater who has been through injuries but whatever.

    Oh and nice strength...

Yay! You started a journal Sounds like you've had quite the adventures with so-called "personal trainers." Ask around your skating community...I'm sure that someone's name will come up as a good resource for sport-specific training. That's how I found my strength coach and it was one of the best things I ever did!

And let me add my voice to the "nice lifts" category...nice to see a fellow skater chick even if it IS figure

Yes its wide grip pietro. And I tried the physio last year for my right knee thru total physio....paid for it on my own. The response was oh we don't have much experience with sports injuries. There is a sports clinic out of burlington I believe but the wait list is phenominal.

Ok closer grip is better.......palms up. But I have to keep thinking back...back.... I'm tending to get more bicep work done....maybe it takes practice?

I like using a close grip with a palms facing each other. I can feel it in my lats the best when performing the exercise this way.

    Gym Fight

Well I originally posted this under general topics but was told it really is journal material so I'll put it in here too. I was at the gym today doing my workout. Life seemed good. Now for those who know me it takes alot to get me really mad. I'm pretty easy going and you have to get all the buttons pushed before I react.... then look out. I go over to the seated chest press and theres a guy just sitting there talking to his friend who is benching. I walk up smiling and say...are you finished? He looks me up and down and says no. I say .....how many sets left (still smiling) and he says two. I say ....Ok I'll be back in a bit when you're done. I come back in a bit and the guy is still sitting there on the same machine talking to the same guy benching. I walk up smiling and say...all done now? He looks me up and down and says no. I say ok then how many sets left. He says two. Ok now the buttons are getting pushed pretty fast. I say ....can I work in with you?. He looks over to his friend on the bench......smiles at me and says no.
No!!!!.....what the f$%#!!!!! Now the buttons are all pushed. I said ....get off. He looks up and says pardon me? I say ......GET OFF. He stands up and takes a step towards me and I take a step towards him. Now he's looking down while I'm looking up. I said you have wasted my time and anyone elses time that wanted this machine......so GET OFF. To make a long story short....we exchanged verbal abuse. Things I can't print on this site but he did make reference to my being a female dog and I told him he was a son of a female dog....as well as an illegitamite(spelt that wrong) son of a dog. After we had thoroughly expressed our vocabulary of animal images......he left and I got my machine. Do you think I should go into negotiating?
