i've been reading postings here saying that barbells are good for strength training while dumbells are better for bodybuilding. is this true?
personally, i'm interested in BODYBUILDING (when i obtain the body i want, i'm sure my strength will be sufficient. i'm a lawyer for crissakes).
would i build more chest if i included more dumbells and less barbell presses? here's my chest routine:
barbell flat bench press (x4)
incline barbell bench press (x4)
incline dumbells (x4)
fly machine (x4)
i appreciate the help.
I prefer dumbbells for everything, unless it's not possible to get the amount of weight i need with them. I don't use machines at all, mostly for some complicated reasons that I probably couldn't explain properly, but also because it makes me feel like a cardio soccer mom I think i only use barbells for squat and DL variations.
Also, you can bench with DB's without a spotter, which is a major plus if your gym is full of dummies/people you'd just as soon rather not talk to.
thanks for the reply. do you even use flat barbell bench?
I like to switch which ones I use. BB one week, DB the next. I do this for a lot of exercises. This way my muscles never really get used to one over the other.
I add both regular BB Bench and heavy sets of incline and decline DB Bench
*Flat Barbell Bench Press 15X "warm up", 8X, 6X.
*Incline Dumbell Bench Press 8X, 6X.
*Decline Dumbell Bench Press 8X, 6X.
*Seated Fly Machine 10X,8X,6X.

I personally prefer DBs but I do BB sometimes. The only comment I would make is that your routine seems to be high in volume. I see 16 sets for chest, personally I would cut it to 7-9. But....if that's working for you then I'll shut up now.
as above 16 sets seem a bit high.
my exprience - joined gym 10 years ago, 6 1/2 years hard weight training exprience.
I was thinking do either incline DB or bar not both. IMO.

I would drop one of the incline presses.
I like dumbells better than barbells for bodybuilding, but in all honesty, it probably doesn't make much difference.
Squats work better than supplements.
"You know, if I thought like that, I'd never put more than one plate on the bar for anything, I'd never use bands or chains, I'd never squat to parallel or below, and I'd never let out the slightest grunt when I lift. At some point in your lifting career (assuming you're planning on getting reasonably strong and big), you're going to have to accept that most people think you are some kind of freak." -Sensei
"You're wrong, and I have a completely irrelevant pubmed abstract that may or may not say so." - Belial
