The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

I would rather poke my eye out with a hot fork.
    Squats work better than supplements.
"You know, if I thought like that, I'd never put more than one plate on the bar for anything, I'd never use bands or chains, I'd never squat to parallel or below, and I'd never let out the slightest grunt when I lift. At some point in your lifting career (assuming you're planning on getting reasonably strong and big), you're going to have to accept that most people think you are some kind of freak." -Sensei

if you mean bent-over rows I think you'd be better off doing seated cable rows or some other permutation of the movement.

    why?

    - restricted path/ROM
    - too easy to simply lean back into it rather than lifting with lats
    - hard to get good body position

i'm not blindly anti-smith like some people on here but I don't like it for pulling motions at all... takes away from the motion i think

i tried these last night, just cuz i felt like it.

I did have some trouble getting in position, but once i got that sorted, i really was able to hit my lats quite well, adn was able to focus on squeezing those shoulder blades together.

granted i'm built smaller then the many of y'all and lift less too, but i found it to be rather effective.

i didn't feel particular awkward either....if anything it forced me to use good form, because with the typical barbell i do get half-assed rather quickly.

jsut wondering if anyone else had tried it.

I bet you could have gotten the same feeling if you reduced the weight a bit on your regular bb row.

well, if it feels good, and it works, go for it sez I!

I made my earlier comments as a general response not knowing that you'd already tried it...

the difficulty you had getting 'into position' may become an issue once you're pulling a lot more weight but for now it's probably no big

I say that because, it's just a bar on a track, not some miracle machine. It probably has some counterbalance, making it easier to lift, which allows you to bring your shoulder blades together easier, which then allow you to "feel" your lats or whatever. You could simply lower the weight on your regular row, and then not have to worry about waiting in line for a smith machine.

well yeah, i mean i do my regular row pretty light, had to bump down to focus on form as opposed to ego-lift, but i gave ti a shot last night, as everyone was squatting with the bbs and i wanted to get home in time to watch survivor.
