The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Should I cut or should I bulk?

I'm 6 feet tall and around 280 lbs.....in other words....much bodyfat to shed, BUT......what would you do if you were in my shoes? What is the best road to take? I am basically a "new" lifter........Should I bulk and then cut? Should I cut and the bulk?
What kind of strategy would you use? I know it's up to me and my goals but I'm wondering what's (for a lack of better word) "easier"?

I'm worried that if I bulk right off the bat......I'll see great gains but will lose it all when I eventually cut.

I think I want to bulk.....but what can I expect if I bulk right away as a rookie and have to eventually lose alot of bodyfat? Should I just cut right away? Would like to hear some opinions along with some reasoning. Thanks alot....

    .

My God....that came out terribly. The reason I'm asking is that I read on here that as a rookie with alot of bodyfat.......I can gain muscle while losing bodyfat at the same time for a little while.

That kind of threw me off and I asked myself why bother cutting at first if I can bulk and get really good gains without putting on much fat?.....or possibly even decreasing my bf at the same time?

But I keep thinking it only makes sense to cut at first....in my position.

I would suggest cutting since you're a rookie and you should be able to gain muscle and lose fat WHILE cutting. I don't know how well it would work the other way around. Personally I'd rather be safe and shed your excess bodyfat if it's as high as you say it is.

I would cut. Being new you will probably gain muscle and lose weight. Even if you didn't I would cut. Are you comfortable being fat? If so bulk.

    Yes....I see your point guys...

Berserker....I'm not comfortable being fat.....but I'll do whatever is best for me.

I saw that bigkevin20 lost about 70 lbs. over a one year period. He said he did an ECA stack and lost about 40 lbs. the first 4 months. I will probably wait a couple months before I think about something like that though......

I know this is an impossible question to answer......but would anyone venture to guess how long a rookie could probably gain lbm while losing bf at the same time? Just for conversation....

I would try and find my maintenance calorie intake and eat slightly under that. This will allow you to lose bf because of the caloric deficit and you will probably see some LBM gains as well since you are new to training. I wouldn't worry much about supplements right now and concentrate more on getting your training routine and diet in place. It would be impossible to say what kind of gains a new lifter will experience due to the fact of so many variables.

I agree with Bradley, eat slightly under maint. and worry about getting a solid diet/training schedule down.

Keep it simple. Get a routine you can stick to add cardio and a ECA if you like. Like you said I said this first couple of months you should get a good amount of weight off. Then it will slow down but keep lifting you will se gains when you get to the weight you want. You will be bigger than you are now muscle wise at least. For me atleast when you have been fat all your life the personal acomplishment of getting the weight of is more rewarding than gaing some muscle that and you cant se during a bulk. But at the same time you will be stronger than you started off anyway. I say cut now lift hard and sculpt your body to a good starting point.

    Moose, you should cut.

At your level you can probably cut 3+ pounds a week for 8+ weeks without hurting yourself. You'll know when your body starts hitting a wall.

After you start hitting a wall is when you will have to decide bulk or cut.

Just make sure you eat a lot of meals. Every 2 or 4 hours if you can manage.
Now in pain, only working out the walking sticks.

    .

I did decide to "cut"......and I'm going to list what my diet has been the past 4 days. If anyone has suggestions about what I'm eating.....or when I eat certain things......please speak up. On non-workout days I substitute another good meal at the time when I would be working out.

    Meal 1
    Oatmeal 1/4 cup
    4 egg whites
    10g Whey + 5g Glutamine w/ Water
    Multivitamin
    1 tbsp. Flax

    Meal 2
    4 eggs (3 whites)
    Kashi Go Lean 1/2 serving
    4oz. Milk (for the cereal)
    Natty PB 1 tbsp.

    Meal 3
Turkey Breast Cold Cuts or Roast Beef Cold Cuts
    American Cheese - 1 slice
    WW Bread (2 slices)
    Mustard
    1 tbsp. Flax

    Pre-workout Shake
    30g Whey w/ MILK

    Post-workout Shake
    50g Whey w/ Water
    Creatine (5g)
    Glutamine (10g)
    Dextrose (75 grams)

    Meal 4
    Chicken Breast
    Sweet Potato
    1 tbsp. Flax

    Meal 5
    Chicken Breast
    Sweet Potato
    1 tbsp. Natty PB

    Meal 6
    1/2 tub Cottage Cheese
    4 or 5 Strawberries
    1 tbsp. Flax

    Meal 7
    1/2 tub Cottage Cheese
    1/4 cup Oats
    1 tbsp. Natty PB

My maintenance calories works out to 4230 calories. The diet listed above works out to around 3200......give or take a little.
My meals are spaced about 2 hours apart.

I have good energy and no cravings so far. My taste buds seem pretty much numb now......so I can eat whatever...whenever.....and it's no problem. Any suggestions?

I know it's early.....but I have not lost any weight thusfar. Pretty much the same as when I started.

Why wait? In either case I agree that you should cut first.
