The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Its no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Optimal bench max performance?

I have a question. My fraternity is having a bench-maxing competition, and I was wondering what the best way to prepare for this was. It will be on Thursday so I have 3 days to prepare. Please, any suggestion will help! Thanks!

    Eat a lot
    Lots of weight low reps.

This should be in training, though

Thats not enough preparation time, im afraid. At least dont work out too hard prior to this contest to prevent your muscles from being sore.

No one that I'll be competing against is absurdly strong, we are mostly recreational lifters. The contest is judged based on ratio. I used to weigh ~200 and I could hit 335 on a consistent basis, but I have been cutting for the past two months. I'm now 179-181 and I think I can hit 295, which might be enough for the win. But anythign greater than 305 will seal the deal. My competition is mostly lighter guys (~150) who can hit ~240ish.

Thanks for all the input so far.

Ah, here we go. What you do between now and then doesn't matter.... just get lots of sleep, eat a lot, and stay OUT of the gym.

The day before... carb up, loads of water.

The day of, I can't stress enough how much hydration affects max performance. Get in the zone early on in the day, get excited for it, keep eating those carbs, keep drinking that water.

If you don't take an ECA, take one about 45 minutes before. If you DO take them already, take 3.

Relax, get hyped up, but don't get TOO hyped up. Stay focused.

Agreed with NDBeast, that would be helpful I think about 30 minutes before the competition. Other than that, just eat up!! Pack your body with tons of carbs and protein. Carb loading I think has helped me hit new PBs.

That has a couple suggestions on form that could give you an edge...though with that bench press t-shirt I doubt you'll need one.

Um, dude, the first few times using equipment is ALWAYS awkward... he'd likely do less his first few times using it, if only because it screws the groove.

    THE RESULTS

Thanks to everyone for all the great advice. Here's how it went down.

There was one representative from each year (frosh, soph, junior, senior). We took turns benching after each set. So we'd gradually go up in weight and finally max out, I went third because I am a junior.

I ate a lot the day of and drank a ton of water. I ended up weighing in at 180, which was by far the heaviest out of anyone. Everyone else was in the 145 zone.

It was judged by ratio of (weight lifted/how much you weigh). It was a close one as the sophomore weighed in 5 pounds less than I thought he would and he increased his previous max by 10 pounds!!! He went right before me, and I did the calculations, and I KNEW I had to hit 315, which I haven't done in at least 3-4 months.

    Final Tally:

    Freshmen: 145lbs benching 225lbs = 155%
    Sophomores: 146lbs benching 255lbs = 174.7%
    ****JUNIORS: 180lbs benching 315lbs = 175%****
    Seniors: 140lbs benching 215lbs = 153.6%

It was VERY close, but I did end up winning. Thanks again to everyone that provided helpful insight!
