The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Progression=Size???

A lot of people on this forum have said that progression=size gains. I have been the exact opposite. In the last 3 months, everything but chest has progressed quite slowly or even at all (I'm talking about going up in weight). For my chest, I've kept progressing every single week and have gone from 45s * 6 to 90s * 6. Anyhow...I'm having the least amount of size gains in my chest. It looks very unproportioned compared to the rest of my body. Can anyone explain this?

Most likely genetics. But a host of other factors may be to blame, but I don't know them nor could I explain them. I have the same problem.

I just don't understand as to why it's lagging so far behind. Should I put in another day for chest?

Bench press hit the tris quite a bit. Not necasarly the best for devloping the chest. Personally after 3 months I probably can't see the differnce in myself.

berserker, what would you say is good for developing the chest. I can't think of any exercise except for flyes that don't work your tris also. the rest of my body has become quite noticeably different considering i've put on almost 20 lbs

If your only interested in adding mass to your chest, flys might be the thing. Give them a shot.
I am more interested in strength. Plus my chest is kinda big, I get comments, and I am not sure if there good. I am cutting right now. few more pounds and I should know how much is muscle and how much is fat.

    Timastyle,

Here is one data point for you...

I used to have the same problem. For long time, my chest just wasn't growing at all. I was making progress in the strength are, but the size of my chest looks the same.

I was doing all kinds of fancy exercise like "cross cable fly, dumbell fly, incline fly, decline fly, and etc." My total chest workout was like 20 sets.

Of course, later I realized I was overtraining. I also started to follow the "Max-OT" routine.

I no longer was doing 20 sets for chest. I also drop alot the fancy movements and stick with only the traditional compound movements. Instead of doing high reps to "burn" my muscles, I foucus on doing heavy weights and low reps to "overload" my muscle.

Since I started doing this Max-OT thing, I have seen a huge difference in my size. Now my chest workout is only consist of (after warm-up) 3 set of Flat bench, 2 sets of incline DB bench, and 2 sets of weighted dips. That's it.

Again, I'm not saying that movement like Flies are not useful. For me, I just found that sticking with some of the basic compound movements seems to work well.

In any case, good luck to you.

Take a look at HST. It might be of interest if size is your primary goal.

And it's been discussed here ad nauseaum.

We tend to think of Sisyphus as a tragic hero, condemned by the gods to shoulder his rock sweatily up the mountain, and again up the mountain, forever. The truth is that Sisyphus is in love with the rock. He cherishes every roughness and every ounce of it. He talks to it, sings to it. It has become the mysterious Other. He even dreams of it as he sleepwalks upward. Life is unimaginable without it, looming always above him like a huge gray moon. He doesnít realize that at any moment he is permitted to step aside, let the rock hurtle to the bottom, and go home.

When was the last time you changed your chest routine and the last time you took some time off? Could be overtraining or your chest muscles have become accustom to the exercises your doing.
If at first you don't succeed, take 5 lbs. off and try again.

your chest may have gianed a lot of your techinique improved.

once there is little room for technique getting better, then you may start to get more growth.

it may be a weak body part, or put in a optimistic way, all your other body parts are really good!

I can't really change my routine all that much. I do incline db bench, hammer strength bench(just added it in), I used to do dips to failure, but now i've started using weights to be able to add onto dips, and once in a while flyes. I just took a week off.

I wouldn't necessarily say size is associated with progress. Progress can mean you developed more muscle density and/or separation and proportions. As far as chest... You generally have 2 body types:
Larger arms and shoulder compared to torso
Larger torso and smaller arms and shoulder

In the case of having better muscle connection with your arms means that you need to use different techniques to hit the chest. One method I feel works well is pre-exhaust. An example is doing a superset of Pec Dec and then going to Incline Bench. The weight you will use on Incline Bench will be lighter than normal but you will be access the muscle better.

How long have you been working out? It could be that you are seeing your CNS operating more efficiently letting you lift more weight without necessarily having to increase size. When you see it slow down (CNS adapted) then you'll probably start to notice more in the way of size gains (muscle has to get bigger in order to deal with more weight).

You've gained 20lbs in 2 months, if thats mostly muscle your doing pretty good. But you still need to give it more time. Do your chest training first in the day so you have more intensity.
What rep range are you doing, sorry if I missed it? Higher reps generally for size.

I've been back in the gym 3 months now after a series of injuries. I think I will try the pre-exhaustion. my rep range is from 5-8 reps

I would probably go 8-10 reps. I do lower reps but I am after strength gains in benching.

I used to feel the same way, but I also used to get hella DOMS the day after. DOMS is in no way indicative of growth, but it did at least tell me that my pecs were getting hit.

Now my mind-muscle connection is good enough so that I can feel it.
