The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Chins suppose to work on the chest?

I did 4 sets of chins (wide grip, palms facing ouwards) and my chest is hurting today. Is my chest suppose to hurt? I thought chins are suppose to work on lats, upper back, bics, forearms, why is my chest hurtin?

You chest comes into play indirectly as its the opposing muscle. At the top of the chin your chest muscles are stretched and at the bottom of the movement your chest muscles are pretty much flexed. There might not be any direct stimulation done on the muscles but it has to move for its opposing muscles, the lats, to work.

Just because its not the directly worked muscle doesn't mean its not moving. Whether through stretching or the contraction at the bottom of the movement it might have received some work.

But then again, was there anything you did yesterday that might have affected your chest. Lifting anything for work? Pushing something?

Was your form on the money? I've seen some guys swing there way up to the point that it almost looks like a straight arm pulldown to the front. Only in mid air. Bet that would work the pecs indirect manner. And would be a big mistake to keep doing them swinging up.

yes i do swing a lot, and i doubt that my form is the best. I just started doing chins, and realized how much of a better exercise it is then pulldowns

The pecs are involved in arm adduction, so in any movement where the arms are overhead and brought down to the sides, they'll be involved to a degree.

Obviously...the internet always has been about punctuation and grammar.
