When I am doing military presses, when I lift the weights above my head I get a sharp, mild pain (actually it's more like discomfort) around my back on the left at the side as if two of my ribs are being crushed together. As soon as I put the weights down the feeling fades away. Is this a common problem? Should I just put up with it and hope it fixes itself with time?

Ok. Just checking. Are you contracting your abdominals? This sounds like a stabilization issue to me. I get this ocasionally when I "forget" to do so.
I had no idea I was supposed to! That's what you get for looking up your excercises on the web
Try that then, it might solve your problem.
